If you’re new here, here’s a little about me: I’m a licensed geologist and hydrogeologist in Washington State. I am also a certified K-12 math and earth/space science educator in WA. Science communication is my passion.
That took awhile. Dang.
The source of the Olympic Pipeline leak has been found & fuel should be flowing to SEA again soon. While this should alleviate some flight disruptions, travelers should monitor the status of their flights.

Whoa. I don’t have any tattoos only because I’ve never come up with anything I actually want permanently on my body. But with a family history of blood cancer, I think I’ll keep being boring. 🤯

Oh wow, this is like my work up here (nitrates in groundwater) and my least favorite new topic (AI data centers guzzling water) combining into an awful news story. I think maybe it’s time to subscribe to RS. Y’all are doing great investigative journalism. 🙏
How Oregon’s Data Center Boom Is Supercharging a Water Crisis

Amazon has come to the state’s eastern farmland, worsening a water pollution problem that’s been linked to cancer and miscarriages.

This is a little over a mile from my house. Thankfully, we are significantly upgradient of it, but oof, it’sa very bad spot for a spill. Extremely permeable soil in a flood plain during the wet season. 😩
I continue to monitor the Olympic Pipeline leak in Snohomish County. I'm receiving regular updates while BP searches for the source. I'm also working with the Port, elected leaders, & others to determine what federal relief can be leveraged to bring more fuel into SEA & minimize flight disruptions.

Currently trying to finish this Sophie scarf I started last year. It's not a huge piece but it feels like a slog for some reason. At least I have passed the halfway mark. #showmeyourknits

FYI
Washington just adopted new rules to reduce PFAS – “forever chemicals” – in everyday products.

The rule limits PFAS in apparel, cleaning products, and car washes, and requires reporting for more categories so consumers get clearer information.

On this Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor the lives of transgender community members violently cut short by prejudice and hate. The reality is devastating: anti-trans violence is an epidemic, disproportionately targeting young, marginalized people, especially Black and Brown trans women.

Panic is temporary...existential dread is forever
Scientists have debunked a viral news report claiming Mount Rainier is experiencing seismic tremors. Here's what's actually happening.
November 20, 2025 at 12:27 AM
Science literacy. It’s important. 😂
Fox News has interpreted Amelia Earhart's final transmission as her being "near 157 degrees east longitude and 337 degrees south latitude."

Join me, friends, at 337 degrees south where we will party with the Loch Ness monster, Sasquatch, and a variety of other things that do not exist.
November 19, 2025 at 6:51 PM
FYI
Some false reports are circulating that Mt. Rainier is suddenly showing seismic tremor activity — this is not true. The signal being referenced is actually radio interference, most likely due to rime ice buildup on the antenna of one of our seismic stations.

More PFAS in the news.

This was the most interesting story. But you get halfway into it and then, BOOM! They throw the paywall up. I like the writing a lot but I guarantee I’ll never click on one of your stories anymore. Put the paywall up after the first paragraph or something, not halfway through the story.

Ocean acidification — caused by the ocean absorbing rising carbon dioxide emissions from human activities — poses a critical threat to the PNW’s coastal communities, marine ecosystems, and $270M shellfish industry. A new short film shows how Washington is at the forefront of this climate issue:

Today I learned the women in my family go into menopause in their mid-60s. I’m not sure why that would be useful in a species but I guess That’s exciting.

No idea if any of you are following along, but we successfully trapped 4 kittens and their mom. Had mom spayed Monday and just trapped the kittens today.

Also, kitten update. These are 3 of the 4 I need to trap. Mom is living in our garage after her spay surgery Monday.

Give it a couple of years. Isostatic rebound will take care of that. Well, and upwelling heat from magma, right?

Haven’t really been on here for awhile but hi. I’m trapping kittens this weekend and it is so stressful. 😩

Ok, I decided to unfollow a WHOLE LOT of people and news sources on here. Whew. I think things will still be informative but not as crazy to pull me in.
