A lot of the business failures of the games industry are really rooted in this desire to create a product that dominates the market. The recent Amazon thing really highlights that: they wanted to create a product that outperformed Steam, but they didn't understand Steam or what the audience wanted.

If you started your project at peak hype for the genre, and you have the usual AAA pace (or can't ship at a lower quality bar because leadership/brand can't afford), you'd ship about now.
What's funny is that overall consumer interest in Extraction Shooters rates among the lowest across genres and yet...

Not niche, fully onboard with this.
Removing the monetization aspect of gambling / corrosive F2P mechanics / etc doesn't actually address the harm those types of games do, and the resultant "dopamine games" being the default engagement of choice for wide swaths of the populace is a condemnation of our way of life

Look, it’s really straightforward to get a publisher as a new name indie in 2025. Simply do 95% of the work making and marketing your game, and if your metrics are trending towards almost certain success, a publisher will swoop in to promise the remaining 5%, deliver 3%, and collect 75%

I think we have a huge problem of echo chamber and broken communication. Engage with what you disagree with, try to grow from it, confront your ideas to others, there may be a bit of pain but thats necessary to grow. Pain is to be met, only trauma should be avoided, and both arent even near.
You can just block stuff that sucks. You don’t have to be mad out loud or even care. You can just see it and quietly put it in the garbage forever

People say to read that with a grain of salt (the guy may be a bit bias) but still interesting.

Y'a eu deux effets très concrets : plus de la moitié des élèves n'amène plus son téléphone au collège (à vue de nez, dans mes classes, c'était du 1/3 en début d'année) et l'autre effet très concret : "bizarrement", moins d'élèves ont absolument envie d'aller aux toilettes pendant les cours.

I think it is pretty weird that GDC made a video with a huge, unstoppable, soulless robot crushing GDC banner in the middle of the desert. It is pretty accurate, true, but I don't think it sends a welcoming message. Pretty terrifying. I guess the new era of GDC is gonna be rough.
