Shaheen, Hassan almost certainly knew this even before they voted to end the shutdown and the only leverage Ds had.

It's disrespectful to constituents to put out phony rationales. I'd have a lot more sympathy if treated honestly, such as admitting they judged Rs will never budge on the subsidies.

I can't stress this enough as a super volunteer for the Democratic Party and Democratic candidates. This should prompt you to get MORE involved, not less. Show up and use the existing infrastructure to make it work for all of us. In my neck of the woods, we've seen a ton of local victories this way.
Right, the answer isn't to abandon the party to these weasels.

The answer is to flood the party with people who will take it over and transform it.
Hey, a lot of people are talking about changing affiliation from Democratic to Independent.

Let me tell you why you shouldn’t do that in Colorado.

One of the main ways to get a primary challenge candidate on a ballot is to caucus for your party. You need to be registered as a Dem to caucus.

Before the ACA, I couldn't get insurance as a freelancer at all, bc I'm a type 1 diabetic, so "pre-existing conditions." It was absolute shit on my health, scavenging for insulin & test strips, constantly in life or death debates about being able to go to the doctor. I had no primary care.

highly recommend @qjurecic.bsky.social's piece in the atlantic. i think it's crucial to understand, as she notes, how overtly political trump admin repression is. it's not abt some bipartisan sense of threat. it's censorship to squash debate, civic space, criticism. the extremes of authoritarianism.

I think a lot about the anonymous note that Judge Young included at the beginning of his AAUP v. Rubio opinion: “Trump has pardons and tanks … what do you have?” The pardons may be more dangerous than the tanks.

Yup. A rapid shift to solar/wind is unquestionably the right decision both as a matter of national interest and economic prosperity, including among the rich. Heck, it's essential for the proposed AI economy.

They oppose it nonetheless because they fear disruption to their political/social control.
I should write the argument up properly somewhere, but I think this is fundamentally wrong. A decisive fraction of the capitalist class does oppose addressing the climate crisis, but *not* because it would be bad for profits. If anything, a green New Deal type program would raise aggregate profits.
Yes, this is correct. And the reason is because our capitalist classes have decided that it is not sufficiently profitable, so they're not going to do it.

We must understand this reality. Capital *cannot* be relied upon to address the climate crisis.

Lord have mercy the Supreme Court is hearing oral argument rn in an appeal from a case I wrote about last year

it's undisputed that Damon Landor suffered a *brazen* violation of his legal rights, yet the GOP justices sound skeptical that he can actually sue the prison guards who violated his rights
Louisiana prison guards subjected Damon Landor to horrible treatment--none of the judges who heard his case dispute that

Nor do they contest the flagrant illegality of the guards’ abuse

But they're divided on whether Damon—and the courts—can do anything about it

That said I am lifting up the Senators who I KNOW fought, like my own @vanhollen.senate.gov. We need to press those Senators to demand a different kind of leadership internally. There’s still a lot more work ahead and we need the leadership to be chastened.
I have come to believe this as well. The list is too strange. I don’t think a majority wanted to cave, but many more than the 8.
I think that these 8 Senators are falling on the sword for Schumer and other Senators who wanted the shutdown to end. This allows the majority of Senators to save face; and only retiring or not up for reelection Senators take the heat.

It’s a ruse.
