New York's (de)congestion pricing, which charges $9 to drive into Manhattan below 60 St, has reduced traffic, increased ridership, reduced subway crime, and is raising funds to fix the decaying transit system. Rare for a public policy to have this many benefits!
EXCLUSIVE: New York’s congestion pricing plan raised $48.6M in tolls during its first month, a strong start that exceeded expectations. The revenue figures, expected to be released publicly on Monday by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, are the latest sign that the tolling plan is working.

A lot of attention gets paid to the great writing and acting in THE WHITE LOTUS but I also want to emphasize how much the show works just because it looks and sounds great. The show is a consistent pleasure to look at and hear in a way most TV shows aren't.

If it seems like everyone is suddenly talking about a rapid catch-up by Chiness AI companies, and you're not sure how we got here, this week's brilliantly-timed briefing on the subject is a very good place to start.

this is incredible stuff. most state DOTs would spend tens of billions on highway expansions to try and see numbers like this (that wouldn’t even pan out anyway thanks to induced demand lol)

I expect congestion pricing to become more popular after it gets implemented and people see it working (as it did in places like London).

Hopefully, this builds the political support for congestion pricing schemes in other cities like DC/Bos/LA/Chi/SF/etc

As congestion pricing takes effect, remember that 85% of people who work in Manhattan commute by public transit, walking, or biking (and the share is even higher for workers in the congestion relief zone south of 60th)

It’s good to see congestion pricing finally being implemented in NYC.

Some bad news here too though
The retiree rolls are growing by about a million people a year faster than in the pre-GFC years -- good news if you're a prime-age worker, it's easier for employers to manage their headcounts without having to do layoffs:

Great podcast on how walkable parts of cities drive a lion’s share of the value and output, and how downtowns are overexposed to office buildings and should instead aim for a portfolio of work-live-play uses.
