The inverse relationship between "people who have the power to help unhoused people" and "people who give a shit about unhoused people" is one of the most reliable features of modern politics, and makes me incandescently angry if I think about it for more than 30 seconds
The Legal System Has Abandoned Poor People to Trump’s Cruelest Impulses
Trump’s crackdown on unhoused people in D.C. is the product of a legal system that bends over backwards to protect elected officials who are bad at their jobs.

Does Hoyer not understand how fascism works? At home OR abroad?????

Hoyer and Pelosi and Jeffries need to retire right now and we need people like Frost and AOC and younger Dems to take over.
The D leadership is broken and lost.

The level of investment in new detention centers requires finding ways to fill them. So we will criminalize whatever is necessary to fill them. See also prisons.
It's not at all alarmist to expect that the new network of detention centers will be used to confine unhoused people—and to extract free labor from them. Everything in this executive order points in that direction.

the Times - and the rest of the reactionary centrists - really, truly do not understand that your average liberal at this point is

a) desperate to see anyone fighting back

b) wants heads on pikes

c) quite aware of how fast we are backsliding towards open bigotry
lol the NYT closed the comment section on their racist Mamdani hit piece and pushed it down from a headline to a tiny article almost at the bottom of the web site. Will never admit they were wrong, but someone certainly realized it was backfiring

The link is that in the US, it's slavery as the model more than colonialism as the model. If slavers are your model of a good father, leader, or political order in general, then domestic abuse is real baked in. Domestic abuse of the planters' white families shows up a lot in the legal record, FWIW.

I always thought the "practice of colonialism but applied internally" was a pretty comprehensive explanation of historical fascism but MAGAism and US conservativism in general seems to draw an unusually large amount of its logic from domestic abuse compared to other fascist movements
Fascism in general is best understood as an abusive relationship played out at the sociological level

You will not understand MAGA/Trumpism until you understand how many Americans are domestic abusers or grew up in abusive environments. Trump sits in at the top of the dominance heirarchy for them in a way that does not make sense to those of us who grew up in healthy families.

The message you should take away from Elon’s rumored ketamine habit isn’t that ketamine is bad.

It’s that all drugs, including ketamine, are useful in some contexts and harmful in others.

If you ran a marathon in stilettos and it went poorly, trying to ban stilettos would be a bizarre reaction.
