Saying racism: calling anti-immigration policies racist as effective pro-immigrant politics in Arizona
Identifying anti-immigration policies as racist commonly features in political discourse in many majority-white countries. Both behavioralist studies of voter attitudes and studies of party positio...

Does calling anti-immigrant policies racist work at opposing them? Much analysis (validly) says no, but I have a new 📖 article 📖 on why this was essential to changing immigration politics in Arizona 🌵. Sometimes the effective arguments aren't already popular! 1/ www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

"A BBC edit was harsh to Trump so the people in charge there have been fired" is just such a bonkers story showing how much of the UK right is being colonized by Trump simps engaged in a culture war against their own country. An "issue" with close to zero resonance for the average British person.
Here’s the same data, but with trust broken down by political views (circles are trust among people on the left, +s the right).
It’s not just that the BBC is widely consumed — it also has solid trust on both left & right, whereas trust in the biggest US media brands is hugely polarised.

I mean, all very clever until voters figure there is no reason to trust you'll help them in the end, while Donald Trump, learning that Democrats won't actually fight, does something like deploy the National Guard to monitor voting during the midterms in minority areas in swing states, or something.

we live in a world that is both political-science normal (governing party overreach, thermostatic reaction, etc) and seriously abnormal (congressional majorities treating the president like a king for partisan reasons)
seems to me that those democrats inclined not to fight perceive themselves as living through a somewhat ordinary cycle of presidential overreach and backlash and not something much more significant and dangerous

This is why this surrender isn't just about this narrow issue but is rather the whole constitutional ballgame:
Democrats are affirmatively signaling they do not want political power at the same time Trump is transitioning the political system into an autocratic one wherein they're denied it forever

Not that he didn’t already know, but now Trump knows for sure he can roll the Dems every time and there’s no need to negotiate for anything

The impossible dream some people on the British right are chasing is that you can have a BBC News operation that retreats from detail and expertise, that takes dictation from the government, but this will only create incompetence and failure when it suits you:

How about we shut down the government for this very popular and specific goal and then, hear me out, we hold out for like a month and a half and then, ok this part is important, after a watershed election where we ran the table, ONLY THEN, fold and don't get the one thing we said we wanted.

the rampant criminality is really something you figure is probably priced in to people voting for Trump in 2024 yet I think actually has exceeded most people's expectations, to the extent they even hear about it
Breaking News: President Trump pardoned Rudy Giuliani and others who tried to overturn the 2020 election. The move doesn’t shield them from state charges.

The pardons of former Trump aides, which would only apply in federal court, are largely symbolic and cannot shield them from ongoing state-level prosecutions.

Not to pile on criticism of the BBC's US coverage today, but it's really not true that the Democratic Senate defections on the shutdown break down on centrist/left lines. Most centrists aren't supporting it and the House Democrats aren't either. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Dems backed Trump into a corner where he’s advocating for starving Americans and hemorrhaging support. If they vote to let him off the hook in exchange for nothing it’s a cataclysmic failure. I know people are in pain but insulating Republicans from political consequences is not the answer.

The reasons that Denmark’s asylum policy won’t work in the UK are the same reasons you can have a British Home Secretary named Shabana Mahmood. Different societies that will deal with very different dynamics when it comes to who wants to go there and why.
