I'm devastated to report that House of Dynamite (2025) is entirely unrealistic because Chicago declared itself a Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone in 1986. Sad that the filmmakers didn't catch this.

And when you account for the massive increase in construction costs during the pandemic, the story looks even worse. We estimate that there was no consequential increase in spending on bridges, rail transit, or transit in general. Even spending on highway pavement has barely increased.

A lot of people on this site are mad about A House of Dynamite for bad reasons. It’s good and you should watch it!

A ★★★★ review of A House of Dynamite (2025)
Truly there is no monster scarier than rational people making totally insane choices because those are the only choices left to them. This movie is competence porn but the competence is in executing a...

I’d never really thought about social media as a new form of Yellow Journalism, but that is indeed what it sounds like
This was an excellent read, and this bit stands out as what's made me most worried over the last few years. The whole information environment is geared to making people angry, afraid or depressed, and before we get to anything as advanced as politics, that's terrible for our brains.

People differentiating between totalizing, dehumanizing language from expressing moral outrage challenge (impossible)
Moral outrage in response to gleeful atrocity is correct, actually.

this is bad, why do so few people seem to care that this is bad, actually??
look i was recently talking to a septuagenarian life long dem (who shall remain nameless) and generic lib, and she was like “i just think there should be firing squads and they should sell tickets.”

The White House has spent 8 months hunting for a Desert Storm "In and out, 30 minutes tops" military conflict so that Trump stops looking like a pussy when he shares a stage with Putin, Xi, etc.
At last, the war with Venezuela that everyone has been asking for.

Ah yes, what will help the left take power is by jettisoning their mainstream allies. Of course!
agree; the don't-fight-numbers-fuckstein types like ezra [probably] know that they're about to get jettisoned in the blue tea party and are desperately trying to negotiate away their pending irrelevance

He in fact very explicitly got out of the game of day to day or week to week political commentary in order to have space to articulate his big ideas across a range of formats and genres

And I think that’s great, but too many people want to have it both ways.

My brain shut down when reading this. This is such a cowardly cop-out answer. As a public intellectual, it *is* your job, actually, to try to persuade people who do not share your values to at least see the value of your contributions. Otherwise you’re just jerking yourself off. We are so fucked.
Throughout, Klein pushes Coates on how to persuade the ~35% of America who believe in hate.

Coates said, essentially, that’s not my job.

It’s a *great* answer on his own terms. He’s a writer not a strategist. If he were to argue in strategic terms, that would be inauthentic.

It’s a great answer.

Liberal values are increasingly right-coded because there's a whole generation of people on the left who have given up on the foundations of free societies. Extremely sad!
SHOULD liberalism be saved? The definition of "liberal" seems to drift farther right with every year and every "compromise."
Many modern self-identified liberals are to the right of Ronald Reagan.

Ezra Klein’s most recent column gives the game away: he talks about how horrified he was by Kirk’s assassination because he identifies with Kirk. Kirk, like Klein, talked for a living. So even if they had different policy positions, to some degree, Klein sees himself in Kirk.
