I often get accused of having a problem with Marxism. This could not be further from the truth; my problem is with Marxists and how virtually all of them are Anti-Marxists.

Today in @aeon.co Andreas Mogensen and I discuss animal welfare, AI welfare, and probabilistic ethics. We make the case for addressing the moral status of animals and AI systems as we address health, climate, and other big issues: with probabilistic reasoning and proportional responses.
An ant is drowning: here’s how to decide if you should save it | Aeon Essays
Should we simply assume that all animals can feel pain and are of moral concern? Or is that taking things too far?

We need massively more electricity generation. The worlds where emissions drop the most are also the ones where we use the most new electricity.
"electrification is also the key to a dramatic improvement in energy efficiency, potentially reducing global final energy demand by 24% over the next 25 years, even as global GDP doubles"

A truly stunning point.

This is why I write about energy efficiency so much!

This turned out to not really be true, btw. Using AI-generated data for training is now a very common practice.

But public discourse lags way behind the actual research

In honor of the day, I turned this idea into an infographic.

One of the ways I look at this: a Democrat is going to be called 'a radical leftie' no matter what their views are and Republicans will succeed in manipulating issue salience.

In the upper right, you at least stop looking defensive.

I know there's a lot going on, but occasionally it's good to remind people that billions of animals suffer in crazy conditions in factory farms. In the U.S. it's gotten worse / denser in recent yrs, contrary to popular conception.

Anthropic isn't perfect, and yet the last month or so is making it pretty conclusive that Anthropic internally is taking philosophical uncertainty more seriously than any other Ai company and it's not even close.
Glad to see this commitment by Anthropic. Preserving models is a low-cost move that could have safety and welfare benefits. Hopefully we'll see other companies commit to this as well www.anthropic.com/research/dep...
