Has there been any other technology where reporters at respected institutions like the NYT just quote confused locals' wild made-up ideas about it verbatim with zero pushback? There are zero instances of data centers flooding land.

I've listened to some recent Tucker episodes to understand how the far right is currently being pushed into the mainstream and I gotta say he's truly masterful at slowly frog boiling his audience each episode. He occupies the same place in my brain as a demon would. Profoundly evil, and good at it

The single upside of RFK is he'll hopefully make processed foods left-coded again so I won't get as many lectures by hippies about my impossible nuggies being bad actually

Every time people talk about the pleasantness of airplanes as some kind of big social issue we should get more fired up about I can feel my much more left wing college self come roaring back.

It’s weird that water became THE issue for why many people (publicly) dislike AI. Of all the concerns about AI use, even just limiting it to environmental concerns, water use is generally one of the least important.

But when I speak with people, especially younger ones, water usually comes up first

I’m very happy to see people moving beyond water to the actual obviously gigantic problems with AI
the water thing about genAI is bullshit but the thing where it makes on-demand nudes and CSAM isn't and the thing where it talks you into killing yourself isn't and those seem pretty bad

Whenever I see video titles like this it becomes hard not to feel like the relationship between the Trump admin and the media critical of them is way more symbiotic than I'd like it to be. How many hours of "can you believe what Trump said?" content have people watched that have actually helped?

I am unfortunately once again accused of being a fascist for doing math on the watt-hour claims so I'm going to politely re-up the distribution of EA political beliefs. and say I'm somewhere between center left and left.

Seriously, why, why why why, is all reporting on this one topic filled with such obviously insane framing decisions?

My 2 hour conversation about AI and the environment on The Cognitive Revolution just came out. We went super in depth here and Nathan came in with a ton of his own really useful intuitions.

A key fact about drivers to keep in mind is that male Uber drivers get on average higher tips than women bc they drive more aggressively/stupidly to get there faster and the passengers like this. A lot of human drivers just really suck and should take the L of having to wait behind better driveres.
Related: One of the most interesting parts of being in a Waymo is you watch other drivers absolutely rage at it because it generally obeys every speed limit and traffic law, and this pisses off so many drivers who are used to being able to pressure other people into going faster.
In both cases part of the disconnect is people getting ticketed for behavior that regular cops wouldn’t cite. I’ve gotten a camera ticket for stopping before the crosswalk but not before the white line. No cop would issue a ticket. Same for going 10 over if it matches prevailing speed.

basically anyone who goes more than medium deep into AI crosses a singularity from which information does not escape back to people who do not specialize in AI. i assume this is some sociological issue and it is definitely above my pay grade
I wonder how much discussion this is provoking in the academic philosophy world. Probing raw idea space, seeing how language mechanistically leads to concepts and how that links concepts almost without humans to explicitly do the linking (unlike in expert systems), sounds deeply philosophical.

Anti-wokism has gone too far.

Seriously in what world is it some new overreach to fire employees who yell racial slurs at customers?
“Those of us on the left should be fighting to improve protections for workers of all races, and thereby for the betterment of people’s material conditions regardless of their views,” Arash Azizi argues:
Why the Cinnabon Story Doesn’t Make Me Happy
The left should be promoting working-class solidarity, not delighting in seeing workers summarily dismissed.
