Hi friends,

Many of you know me, some it’s the first time meeting.

Here’s an introduction from last month when BlueSky has a multitude of new accounts. It’s a decent overview of my social media interactions & goals.

TL;DR: daily natural wonders, always punch a nazi, good faith engagement.
Welcome new friends and friends I haven’t seen in awhile~

If you’re sharing this BlueSky space with me you’ll be seeing a lot of mountain & desert adventures, the wonders of the cosmos, and lots of invertebrate creatures. 💜💙💚

Until a can get a Summer Selfie that’s a bit more current, here’s wrapped up for the hopes of winter weather and snowy hillsides.

An eyed click beetle (Alaus sp., guessing A. zunianus), SE Arizona. The eye spots, through a combination of black pigment and structural absorption, absorb over 96% of light. Measured in STUs (Spinal Tap Units), how much more black could they be? The answer is none. None more black. 🐙🌿⚫⚫ #BugSky

Long Pond in Acadia NP about an hour after sunset tonight, on the eve of a snowstorm. The light reflecting off of the waves in the foreground is actually moonlight, not the remnants of twilight in the distance.

Look at that textbook, U-shaped glacial trough. *chef kiss*

My Uncle Jimmy was infected in first wave of HIV/AIDS in the 80s. I was just a kid. I can barely remember him. He was fun, and funny, and played honky tonk piano. He was a Vietnam vet. He bought me LEGOs. :) I can remember his laugh.

I miss him.

It’s #MeiofaunaMonday! “Meiofauna” are microbial eukaryotes with a body size <1 mm (these animals and protists are as small as specks of dust you might see on a glass coffee table). Almost all of the 38 major animal groups have at least some small-bodied meiofauna species.

Yesterday’s surprise unexpected surprise for the last day of November. Along a desert, wintery lake hike.

I love to grab pieces of driftwood and throw it back into the waves. But this time, my hand froze before grabbing the wood.

There’s no better fish to kick off this year’s #25DaysofFishmas than the aptly-named Christmas darter (Etheostoma hopkinsi)! We get our road trip started down in the southeastern US with this small species of fish who has big holiday spirit all year long

I buy stuffed animals at yard sales for my dog. They never hit the floor before being savagely eviscerated of their stuffing, then gnawed to shreds. The children selling their old toys often say "I hope your kid likes it as much as I did." I say "thanks" like a monster.
