Good explainer on the cloture vote for the CR last night
Some thoughts on the CR/minibus.
1 The Dems negotiating with Rs were not freelancing. They coordinated with Sen Schumer. A few were ready to give in on day one, others worked to maximize appropriations wins.
Those voting for the 'deal' are the ones furthest away from electoral consequences.

Okay well, just in case, I’m still calling @senangusking.bsky.social today to ask him to vote “no”.
People are saying that this vote wasn’t for the CR, it was “just cloture”, which is true, but…
Every one of those Democrats who voted for cloture stood there and said on national television that they are voting for the CR.

I got this useful bon mot from a middle school teacher recently.
In response to, “I DONT UNDERSTAND,” he calmly said, “okay what steps have you taken to understand?”
And that’s when I realized that a lot of folks have no steps.

My family has been without half our income for 40 days. It has been.. very hard.
We are willing to feel that pain so people can have health care next year, or to undo these illegal recissions.
We are not willing to have been put through this for NOTHING.

Yeah, it didn’t work because YOU caved, @senangusking.bsky.social! I am so disappointed. You were supposed to be our good Senator.

There was so much energy and activity that someone would have described the structure of DNA if he had not been there at all. This idea that we must suffer Badly Behaved Men of Science because they alone would have found something that many were seeking seems like status quo reinforcement. 2/2

The article by @matthewcobb.bsky.social is very good and feels more representative of the messy, collaborative way that scientific discoveries happen. Yet I will always despise James Watson for who he was and how he treated people. 1/2
If you believe either that Franklin discovered the double helix, and / or Watson and Crick stole her data, ask yourself how you know this. Then take a read of this article.
If I see one more stupid Rosalind Franklin take I'm going to lose my mind. Thank god for @matthewcobb.bsky.social and @nccomfort.bsky.social. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Well, as an American geneticist, I thought I’d have something to say about James Watson dying, but really my last four reposts cover it perfectly and I have nothing to add, so I’ll just leave it at that.

James Watson, the sexist racist who stole Rosalind Franklin’s ground breaking research on DNA, created his own (sadly widely believed) genius mythology with a popular book, is dead.
In case anyone is wondering if Watson was really THAT bad, @lpachter.bsky.social compiled a list of quotes that are absolutely not for the faint of heart.

It's important to remember that while the degree to which James Watson deliberately stole from Rosalind Franklin is still in dispute, he also shit on her in his memoir for no apparent reason other than to save face and then spent the last two decades of his life pushing bullshit race science.
