Always liked how early the Royal Navy started down its path of giving its most lethal warships embarrassing names.

Nothing worse than discovering you've just had the crap kicked out of you, in naval terms, by the "Peter Pomegranate"
In 1511, £142 4s 6d (about £132,700 in modern money) was spent on supplies "for painting and staining of certain banners and streamers for the use of our ships called the Mary Rose and Peter Pomegranate"

One other 7/7 thread today. Because I think how the bus network got running again is a real testament to some serious heroes that day:

The bus drivers and staff who got that network running again and got London home that night.

And TfL/the Mayor disobeyed the Security Services to make it happen /1

The secret German weather station on the Arctic island of Svalbard. Part of the 'Weather War'.

The team, led by Lieutenant Wilhelm Dege, were the last German troops to surrender in WW2, finally doing so FOUR MONTHS after Germany had officially surrendered.

It was not for want of trying. /1

As it is that time of year again, here is W/C L.E. Healy's wonderful response to the Air Ministry's reminder, hours into the landings in Normandy, that 2TAF's Hawker Typhoon Bomphoons were not cleared to drop 1000lbs bombs.

The Canadian Tiffys had already dropped 48 of them that morning...

The amazing detail in this story is this lad's neighbour frantically whistling to try and draw the ship's attention to the dangerous local hazard known as [checks notes] Norway.

If it hadn't noticed houses are generally stand on vessels a bit of whistling probably ain't going to do it, fella.

Interestingly, I just did my first security training that included deepfakes, which advised vigilance against your boss having an unusual tone or making odd requests. Looking forward to “Sorry, boss, I didn’t do that because the suggestion was so stupid I assumed it was a scam.”

A little while ago, my parents' cat Bridget went missing. As the weeks dragged on, they became extremely worried. My dad devised a way to distract himself: he began to paint Bridget's adventures, imagining her travelling through time and popping up in some of art and music's most iconic scenes.

People talking about St. Pierre and Miquelon, so I’ve got Acadian Saturday Night playing on a loop in my ear.

We should talk more about the Amphibious Christmas Liberation of St. Pierre in 1941, when the Free French pissed off the US and UK by recapturing the island with six guys and a toothbrush.
