The tragedy of Britain's post-war isolation from Western Europe began with Churchill. Nobody can challenge his titanic qualities, but by the time European unity became an issue, he was too old and tired to give an inspiring lead. He was also, doubtless, conditioned by his wartime experience. I heard from a colleague at the Observer an amusing, but bizarre illustration of this. A friend of his, an army officer, was sent to discuss with Churchill, in his extreme old age, the arrangements for his funeral. These had been set out in what Whitehall calls 'a war book', a detailed plan for any major event which can be anticipated - and none is more predictable than death. The officer expected that Churchill would simply leaf through the plans, and confirm them. But to his surprise the old man said he wished to change the arrangements for the cortège after it left St Paul's: instead of going by gun-carriage to Paddington Station, en route to his ancestral home at Blenheim, he wanted his coffin to be taken the short distance home at Blenheim, he wanted his coffin to be taken the short distance uprver by Admiral's Barge, and to leave from Waterloo. The officer ponted out that Paddington, on British Rail's Western Region, not Waterloo, on Southern Region, was the terminus for Blenheim. But Churchill, remarkably alert for a man of his age, recalled that there was a connection between Southern and Western Regions at Reading. Seeing that the young officer was perplexed by his proposed change to the plan, the old man twinkled, and said: "Look, if de Gaulle dies before me, we can stick to present arrangements. But if he's to be at the funeral, I want it to pass through Waterloo.*
