I spent October traveling to schools throughout the South talking to students about American history. What I found were young people who understand we can tell a story that includes both the positive and the negative. As one 8th grader in Memphis said, “Doesn’t seem that hard, just say both things.”
Tell Students the Truth About American History
We owe it to Americans of all ages to be honest about the country’s past, including its contradictions.

“The idea that all of this happened because, like, twelve professors at Berkeley used “Latinx” on their syllabi is just detached from reality, from my point of view.”

a thought i have reading @clintsmithiii.bsky.social’s wonderful piece is that one reason the administration wants to erase any mention of the worst of our past is because it is intent on recapitulating those atrocities www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
Actually, Slavery Was Very Bad
The president’s latest criticism of museums is a thinly veiled attempt to erase Black history.

The path to the end of Roe V. Wade was paved with abortion providers being killed, and clinics being bombed and set on fire.
I'm a believer in nonviolent resistance for moral reasons, and I think it can be incredibly powerful when well-planned and sustained, but don't tell me violence doesn't work. The people successfully rolling back my rights were sending bomb threats to children's hospitals.

Referring to not one but TWO skaters as "Dr."? Check.

Aside from video games and Bosch, this story I wrote, on how skateboarding revived an urban plaza in San Francisco, hits all my buttons.

"Flatten the curve" is maybe the most successful slogan of the last 10 years and conveys a relatively complicated idea! The difference is that the media helped explain and operationalize its underlying message. With "Defund the police" the media did the opposite.
"Medicare for all" also requires explanation! So does "I like Ike" and "Black Lives Matter" and "Think globally, act locally" and every other political slogan ever
I am begging everyone to not confuse a clear and broadly popular slogan with one that needed a footnote and a paragraph of explanation.

my endorsement for any democratic presidential candidate who promises to send the entire DOGE team to prison
This is insane and everyone involved needs to be sued into oblivion and then go directly to jail

Worth noting (since the right-winger who wrote this article didn't) that Idaho has an income tax. A pre-pandemic study found that if WA adopted Idaho's tax system, we'd have literally double the amount of revenue for the state budget that we have now.

i do think it's worth mentioning — and i expect it *will* be mentioned in court — that there's an obvious logical disconnect between "we want you to build more megaprisons for our citizens" and "we have no control over who you imprison or release".

Yes. If these people gave a shit about "bringing good jobs back to America," they would be fighting to improve the quality of the jobs we already have. There's nothing inherent to the work of a taxi driver or waitress that has to be less secure than a 1950s factory worker.

🚨 Everyone needs to call their Dem Senator right now. They are starting to cave.

Tell them:
1. Vote NO on Cloture
AND
2. Vote NO on the Republican spending bill.

Don’t let them pivot to reconciliation. GOP doesn’t need Dem votes on that and they know it.

TODAY is the showdown.

IF TRANS ISSUES ARE SO INCONSEQUENTIAL DOES SOMEONE ON THE NYT MASTHEAD WANT TO EXPLAIN WHY THEY SPENT THREE YEARS RUNNING A1 “INVESTIGATIONS” INTO SAFE AND EFFECTIVE MEDICAL CARE AND THE LANGUAGE CHOICES OF NON-PROFITS AND HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS????
Of course the NYT sees the "DEI" stuff positively & is neutral on anti-trans discrimination
