The New Yorker asked me “how bad” today’s Supreme Court ruling was. I boiled it down to one paragraph:

Bondi continues to make a big deal of the block-long chase to apprehend suspect in Dugan case. She’s got it totally backwards. The far greater threat to public safety is the many criminal defendants w/ immigration problems who won’t show up for court now, thinking they could be arrested and deported

The richest 0.1% of Americans control $22 trillion in wealth.

The bottom 50% control $3.8 trillion in wealth.

Read that back.

Folks, this is what oligarchy looks like.

Senator Van Hollen’s commitment to the Abrego Garcia case isn’t performative. Wearing an overnight maxi pad on your ear after an “assassination attempt” is performative.

This is an obvious point, but cannot overstated. There is an enormous difference between deporting someone - where they get off a plane as a free citizen in their home country AND FUNNELING THEM INTO A BRUTAL PRISON FROM WHICH THEY HAVE NO CHANCE OF EVER EMERGING!!!

Kilmar Abrego Garcia was illegally abducted and is being held in a notorious prison in El Salvador — barred from contacting his family or lawyers.

I’m speaking to the press now after we were denied access to the prison to check on his condition. Tune in:

You saw the video of the ICE agent breaking a car window near the border, right? He wasn’t an ICE agent. He’s the founder of Veterans on Patrol, a FAR-RIGHT MILITIA patrolling the border for migrants. They’re basically deputizing militias to act as federal agents. This is dangerously out of control

Yes, I’ve noticed this too. There’s a photo-op room with the most alarmingly tattooed prisoners but there’s no real indication that anyone else is at CECOT and guards appear to outnumber prisoners 10-to-1. In my darkest moments I think they’re disposing anyone who doesn’t look enough like a gangster
Is almost *anyone* at CECOT alive?

Reportedly no prisoner has ever been released from CECOT, and while CECOT is open to selfie visits from pro-torture politicians, their pictures always feature the same room and show a small number of hand-picked Salvadoran prisoners who fit the desired aesthetic.
