As end-of-empire scenarios go it is so much more dignified to get your capital city sacked by the Visigoths than to have a bunch of illiterate rich people in their 70s doing it through a series of incomprehensible tantrums because their brains were defeated by their phones.

I hope the new party does well, Zack wins, Starmer is replaced by a soft left leader and the Lib Dems' progressive wing asserts itself. Cos honestly, an effective popular front against a Reform / Tory / Murdoch bloc will require ALL of those conditions to be met.

There's a type of person who argues there's no point stopping selling plane parts to Israel as they would only get them elsewhere, or the government can't condemn Israeli genocide as it would make no difference, and it's amazing to me that they have never before encountered the concept of "morality"

How many perpetrators of domestic violence, or child abuse, or sexual assault will Yvette Cooper release early to imprison people aghast at the genocide in Palestine, and her authoritarian response, and wanting to speak of it?

Absolutely grim, a real milestone in Britain's political history.

If there's a route back from this, it will surely require turning our backs on the party that brought this about.

There are many British commentators who have made several posts showing deep concern for Rachel Reeves over the last 24 hours but apparently lost their phones whilst hundreds of thousands of disabled people were terrified of losing the benefits they need to live.

2 (77) years into a genocide and I'm still getting emails saying I shouldn't have called it an "apartheid wall" in my last book. War, genocide, LGBTQ rights, ecology - it's increasingly hard to tell the actual fascists from the absolute enablers. You're either for love and justice, or you're not.

This country seems to have settled on a version of free speech where it's important to be shocked and offended at university but not permitted to shock or offend at a music festival

I can't believe it needs to be said, least of all to a Labour Government, but we should be tougher on genocide than peaceful protest against genocide.

I don't think I've ever felt so little political hope as I do at the moment. Long-held taboos - on state violence, exterminationism, racism, crimes of aggression, genocide - are being more openly flouted daily. The mechanisms governing political accountability and response seem completely broken.

Britain is still providing arms to Israel. So it's doing a lot more than "tolerating" this world historic evil. It's continuing to participate in it.

Lammy's retoric was strong, but the announced actions were feeble. If we want to support the people of Gaza then we need to be clear about that.

To be clear: the EHRC are also undermining other key areas, including rejecting the notion of systemic racism, having a board member who thinks 'misogynist' and 'homophobe' are 'propaganda terms' and refusing to investigate the link between disabled people's deaths and the DWP.

You know why European countries are so quiet about the El Salvador situation? Because they started the normalisation of extraterritorial detention of migrants and asylum seekers, often without any due process. The UK’s Rwanda plan. Italy’s attempted plan with Albania. And some still want to do it.

There's a lot of ink spilled on how Democrats should win back low-info voters (particularly young men) with rightward shifts when "stop being weak and pathetic" is the better tack. The reason AOC gets respect from low-info voters is that she doesn't let people walk all over her the way Schumer does.

This is Labour’s poll tax. Its tuition fees. It is - as Iraq was for Blair - the moral stain that will mark Starmer’s government and the party for years to come. Severely disabled people are going to be starved, isolated and degraded. No Labour MP who backs this will be forgiven.
