It turns out very rich people are so used to being told they're right that the machine that only says "yes, you're so smart" in statistically likely ways can easily trick them into believing it is as smart as they believe they are.
Putting aside many of the ways this is insanely embarassing and focusing on one mistake you'd maybe think this particular kind of person would not make:

surely a programmer on video games of all things would know better than to draw a conclusion like this about a program from its *output*?

This is important!

"But we still enjoy works of problematic people like (x, y, z)"

Stop. JK Rowling has said flat out that she is using her money to fund transphobic shit.

We do not support transphobes. We do not support hate. Repeat that with me. Trans lives matter more than ANY story.
"Separating art from the artist" is always a complicated conversation.

But when an artist says they are going to use their art's proceeds to further hurt marginalized people, don't just believe them, SHUN THEM.

The Trans community needs your support more than you need ANOTHER fucking Harry Potter.

To be clear on what they're proposing: human beings using water for drinking, washing, and growing crops will be rationed.

The AI datacenters will have all the water they can contaminate.
Some places will have to start rationing water - to enable AI slop.

"A data center like Meta’s, which was completed last year, typically guzzles around 500,000 gallons of water a day. New data centers [will] require millions of gallons of water a day"

If you’re a writer, artist or creator, you should be leading the fight against AI

You shouldn’t be encouraging other creators to use it “for good”

There is no good use of AI

It steals people’s work. It generates slop. It’s destroying the environment

There is no “morally good” application for it

the core idea that can radicalize people is so simple:

there is enough.

there is enough food to feed everyone. enough resources to house everyone. money and technology and medicine to stop the suffering of people around the globe.

once you accept that there's only one question:

why don't we?

I'm going to be honest here, I think AI is going to do so much damage to the usable internet that even after it's inevitably crashes out, it's going to take years to disentangle from every space it's polluted, like digital asbestos it's gonna be time consuming effort and likely expensive venture.
I think AI is going to eventually tank in the longterm, but...

the only real way to combat this is single-interest communities. Forums, user comms, etc, with a barrier to entry. They become trustable knowledgebases. It's really the only way forward is to return to what worked best the first time

New York City (and state) have both expressed interest in mask bans.

These discriminatory ugly laws put lives at risk.

They exclude disabled people from public spaces while increasing police harassment of marginalized individuals.

Everyone deserves the legal right to mask up!

Masks are under serious threat at being banned widely due to politicization. This would be a public health disaster. If you are only wearing a mask at protests, please consider also wearing them elsewhere. The more people mask, the more we normalize masks and protect them against bans.

Whatever your personal beliefs on Assisted Dying, we should all be able to agree on 2 fundamentals:

No means no. If a patient doesn’t want it, end of discussion.

It should never be offered in lieu of care or social supports.

If it is, it’s not compassion.

It’s eugenics 🧵
