“Why are folks getting dumber?” Because they don’t read. “Why aren’t men as romantic & poetic as they used to be?” Because they don’t read. “Why are people so vulnerable to propaganda?” “Why is everyone a conspiracy theorist?” Because they don’t read. Because they don’t read.

For like the zillionth time: Libraries are FREE for you, but WE still get compensated for our work!!
Just saw someone claim that authors who want to be paid for their work are "class traitors" because we "only let the wealthy" read our books, and I think I need to go into the woods to scream into the night for a bit.

It's $5, not your first-born child! I need that $5 for health insurance!

Their response to the video by Sen. Kelly et al shows that Trump and Hegseth are crap politicians. A clever politician would say, “Of *course* soldiers may disobey unlawful orders.” The outrage blows any cover of plausible deniability they might claim when, God willing, they’re held accountable.
Mark Kelly: "My wife, Gabby Giffords, meeting with her constituents, shot in the head. Six people killed around her, a horrific thing. She spent six months in the hospital. We know what political violence is and we know what causes it too, The statements that Donald Trump made incites others."

This thread, y’all … but especially this part.
Some of you might be tempted to say “women are nurturers by nature” and let me just tell you: no we’re not. Our girlhoods are simply an apprenticeship in putting ourselves last. We are conditioned from birth to base our worth in how well we care take rather than achieve our own goals. It’s shit!

The biggest divide is not between “right” and “left." It’s between democracy and oligarchy. The billionaires who control our economy and democracy seek to divide us. They want us to turn on each other so we don't look up and see that they have all the wealth and power.

Not Sure How They Deal With Criminals In Your Town, But ’Round Here We Use A Restorative Justice Process
Well, well, well. What have we got here? Another city slicker who thinks he can waltz into my town and start causin’ all sorts of trouble. I’d be careful if I was you, fella. Because however they do t...

I need everyone who uses AI to generate art & text to notice what Vince Gilligan says here. You're surrendering your brain, your creativity, the divine spark within you to a machine. Someday you'll wake up and find you're no longer capable of writing or thinking. And for what?

Too many people have resigned themselves to not reading because they fear they no longer have the focus for it. You only need to limit your screen time for a few days to begin feeling the effects on your brain. I promise you, you are capable of reading books again.

"Republicans could end this right now. They are choosing to make this shutdown an issue where they pit the sick against the hungry. The reality is, this is a false choice. Prior to this moment, we've been able to afford both the ACA subsidies and SNAP benefits."

Journalists need to do better, but most of them won’t because their outlets are owned by pro-authoritarian oligarchs. Reframing the question this way is a great response to bad questions.
I love how Rep. Joe Neguse reframed this question.

I have never loved Lawrence O’Donnell more than I do right now. This takedown, calling out Epstein, Trump, and the entire royal family all at once is sheer brilliance. #AbolishTheMonarchy #NoKings anywhere

Boy, North Carolina Republicans sure don't want the attached story to circulate. I sure hope that this stupid threat from their spokesperson doesn't boomerang on them and have a lot more people read and share the story, which once again, is conveniently attached below. That would be a shame.

This thread, y’all… but especially this part:
(4) Trump and the Republicans don't have an advantage over Democrats because they *better understand heartland Americans.*

They have an advantage over Democrats because they created their own universe of propaganda outlets, and then went out and bought all the mainstream outlets.

Duh.

Jane Austen's 250th birthday is coming up in December and I hope you'll celebrate by taking a turn about the room, acquiring a passion for dead leaves & closet shelves, and taking a fancy to the last person you could ever be prevailed upon to marry.

812,000 Arizonans don't have a representative right now because Republicans refuse to swear in Representative-elect Adelita Grijalva. The GOP must stop playing games with our democracy.

Norms & duct tape. That's all the Republic has turned out to be, because the laws & the Constitution do not enforce themselves. There are about 30 people in Washington who can fix this. We should stop giving them free passes all day every day & laser-focus on getting them to do their damn jobs.
It is incredibly difficult to get folks to understand that there are literally 20-30 people in DC who could end all of this tomorrow, & all of them are Republicans in Congress, & no one in the National Conversation seems interested in paying attention to that.

If you want to push back against tech's encroachment into every corner of our lives, you have to read books. They're eager to create a future in which most people are illiterate and hooked on slop, a world without imagination or knowledge. Reading is resistance.

Remember April 2009 when about 250,000 people took to America’s streets in Tea Party rallies and the media was like “oh man, the Dems are in trouble?” Approximately 28X as many people took to the streets to protest Trump yesterday. Didn’t even make the NYT front page.
In April of 2009 I observed the Tea Party rally in Salem. As this front page story says, there were a couple hundred people there. This past weekend in Salem there were roughly 2-3000 people at the Hands Off rally. Yet the Tea Party coverage seemed to take that event far more seriously.

They don't think they're public servants.

They think they're kings, princes, dukes, and barons. They control the government, and that makes them royalty, and that means our money should be used to buy them planes and gold-plated toys and gilded ballrooms
