My big hot game design take is there is truth to "players are great at spotting where there is a problem, but terrible at diagnosis and solving it". More time than not when you hear the big gamer lingo in discourse (filtering out of the bigotry) there is a real grievance underneath.

I get really frustrated with the way so many people try to gatekeep "game design" behind the activity of "product design", like it only counts if you're making a complete object to offer to people. But "thinking like a game designer" is something most RPG players do in order to even play at all.

Hey listen, Sega may have made some HUGE mistakes, but. They were an innovator. They had DLC, they had the Sega Channel, they innovated with game design in the arcades and home console with shit like Shenmue and Phantasy Star Online. They made MISTAKES, but they believed in a future...
after all of this, i never want to see people compare xbox's downfall to sega's ever again. sega made games and cared about their creatives. Isao Okawa gave all his money to his staff just to make sure they kept going. everything microsoft has done in the past year has proven them scum of the earth.

The more I write interactive dialogues, the more it feels like level design — and vice versa. Just as dialogue is navigation through a socio-cognitive space, exploration is a form of conversation with the environment. In the end, both are about finding the best way to communicate. #gamedesign
