My first year living in Germany, our director would turn off the lights and literally shoo the international colleagues out of the office. If someone showed up sick, they weren't allowed in the building, but sent home by taxi. It usually took two years for US colleagues to adjust. It's trauma.

Introduce the area and then just be quiet for a bit. Some players need time to think and figure out what they want to engage with. In your haste to forge a story, we can forget to give the players time to breathe.

If you're about to GM a session, consider doing some vocal exercises as a warmup. Sessions can take a LONG time, and stretching your voice a bit before you start will help prevent long-term damage. Don't go into a session cold and make sure you drink plenty of water.
