The Trump apologist checklist after Trump or his administration does something awful:

1. Fake news, it didn’t happen.
2. It might’ve happened, but it would be OK if it happened.
3. So it happened, so what.
4. Whatabout [insert names of various presidents here]

Probably only works if you're a Christian, but if I were a student there, I'd pull this nonstop.

Campus cops trying to shut down the frat party? Psalm 100 tells us to make a joyous noise!

Go wild, kids. They're begging you

Heartening that so much of the US national security community is taking Trump/Hegseth’s illegal boat strikes seriously.

A big part of the political struggle we’re in: does anything matter?

Various veterans, lawyers, academics, journalists and members of Congress on the relevant committees say yes.

Yes; the problem isn’t the rules. It’s enforcement of the rules. It’s not self enforcing.

In a nation of self-proclaimed patriots, the majority of them haven't a goddamn clue what is in the U.S. Constitution, and couldn't tell you the difference between it and the Declaration of Independence.

When it comes to our founding documents, majority of Americans are pathetically illiterate.

I don’t even really think this is the problem. The Constitution prohibits basically every terrible thing Trump has done. The problem is that our institutions have decided to ignore the Constitution. Can’t fix that by changing what it says.
This regime is making the best arguments possible that we need to fix the foundations of our democracy if we want to keep it.

At some point you just run out of things to say, right? There’s no argument to make. There’s nothing to discuss. The executive branch is saying “We make our own law and obey no one” and either you say “Okay, I guess you do” or you put down the whole administration and salt the earth where it stood

Excellent article explaining why restricting jury trials is exactly the wrong thing to do in this moment when democracy is threatened.
"The reason trial by jury is so important is also the reason the authorities seek to restrict them: juries can think independently"

Jenrick has already pledged that a Tory govt would reverse 'Blair-era changes' that restrict ministerial involvement in judicial appointments.
“Cutting ordinary people out of the judicial system, weakening the scope of jury trials, and leaning even more upon magistrates and judges, will reinforce a more technocratic system and only deepen public mistrust.” My @theobserveruk.bsky.social column: observer.co.uk/news/columni...

When pro-democracy people say they support rule of law, they mean a government and national leader bound by law, with institutions upholding that.

No one advocating rule of law in that context means all law is inherently good and any dictators’ proclamations must be respected as such.
