Tonight's concert was at a theater in a casino and it was by far the weirdest venue I have ever been to. We were running late so we took a shortcut across the casino floor to get to the theater and that place was 100% cursed.

This may explain why there’s an aggressive response to people who merely post Kirk’s own words. It threatens the existence of the alternate Kirk - the motivational speaker that had been marketed to young kids and white Christian groups through selective quotation & clips.

I was served a non-skippable ad for the Jonas Brothers tour before the new Lorna Shore music video. I have thoughts about how this isn't just lol silly ad algorithm and there IS some audience overlap... maybe I'll add it to my sabbatical writing queue.

CNN: Hey Dave it's CNN. Could you come on to talk about the death of Hulk Hogan

Me: Hulk Hogan was a racist scab and a liar. He hated unions, Black people, and the truth and that's why he loved Donald Trump. What time do you want me?

CNN: Great! Well.... so we'll keep looking

Because of Jack & many, when I got my job, when I set up con dinners in advance, I invited X people & made reservations for X+1 (or more), with the collective understanding that invitees were agreeing to help find a newbie/junior to invite at the conference & pay their bill (& tell them upfront).
Paul Korshin used to say the only valuable function senior academics play in the ecosystem is paying for their juniors’ dinners.

The West's collective inaction on decisively ending Israel's barbaric genocide of Palestinians – a slow, brutal slaughter our governments are perpetuating through arms sales to what must now be termed a terrorist state – is a bloody stain we will never be rid of. 💀
this is one of the worst crimes in human history and the entire global north and all of us in it share the responsibility

I understand Bob's hesitation here about writing the negative book review, but if academics can't say that practices or work is bad in any way then what are we even doing here. Really appreciate the careful analytic work about why this stuff matters in this piece.
I wrote something new for History Respawned today. It's a review of a new book about Red Dead, but it's really about academic writing and historical game studies as a field. Please read, but also know, I really really really really REALLY didn't want to write this review.

Difficult to overstate how much blood RFK and Trump will have on their hands in the coming years.

Difficult to overstate how many innocent kids will die as a result of the people who cast votes for Trump last November.
A chilling reminder that American science denial does not just affect people in the US, it kills people globally.

It's far past the time where we need regulation for AI. This will get people hurt, and volunteer SAR teams will take the brunt.
"AllTrails has a new generative AI feature that can be asked to 'shorten my route' or 'make this more scenic.'

But the people in charge of searching for lost hikers say the feature is going to exacerbate an issue they’ve been warning about for years: hiking apps providing false information."

For anyone who thinks I'm joking here (and it's funny, but no) rumor is that the National Guard deployed in LA was sent under a 29 day order to avoid housing allowances, which means they have to fully pay for their own shelter. In LA. Zero notice. Durable fascisms don't shortchange the muscle.
Sad as it is to say, the greatest consoling thought I have as we march towards a fascism is how unlikely it is to last not because people are brave, or moral, or prepared to combat it... but because it's expensive to maintain, and the man driving us to it couldn't even keep a fucking casino afloat.

My plan for "detained in a city I don't know" is always "check if there's a National Lawyers Guild hotline for that city; if not, call the first defense lawyer I find for the immediate need and ask them to refer if they say they can't handle it".
