From Wired a few weeks ago. A lot of the people who I was told for years were the adults in the room are being asked how they want to be remembered, and that answer is very clearly "cowards."

great news! you're not actually seeing karl rove, john yoo, and david frum criticize the administration's lawlessness more stridently than dem leadership. you, reader, were infected with rabies by a brown bat 36 hours ago and this is all just the virus working its way through your nervous system

People want everything to be a binary between dooming and “we’re so back” but I’ll just say this is both a really troubling attack on press freedom and an open admission that your regime is fragile enough to feel threatened by Jimmy fucking Kimmel

We’d be in a much stronger position right now if mainstream Democrats had taken a common sense stand for First Amendment principles instead of piling on undergraduate standing up for Palestine.

a key reason they see an opening for such a blatant speech crackdown is that they already did one to Palestinian and anti-genocide activists and it got enthusiastic bipartisan approval

This is extremely important. What is described in this thread would constitute massive corruption of the U.S. legal system, aided and abetted by a public university. Journalists must immediately examine the facts here, and so should California legislators and regulators. Shocking.
1/ I represent 5 anti-zionist students and faculty challenging the outrageous claim that the Palestine Solidarity Encampment was a "Jew exclusion zone". UCLA refused to defend. Today they agreed to pay millions instead. I can't overstate how dangerous this is. 🧵

Ok then. Now it will be a big story. Too many people have told me they thought it was all over a month ago in LA. It wasn't but unless you paid close attention you wouldn't know the city has been under siege this whole time.
ICE will “flood the zone” in NYC after the City Council blocked federal law enforcement agencies from opening an office in the city jails.

In the past month NYT has published 32 articles that mention Mamdani and “globalize the intifada", 13 that mention Israel's fake "aid" agency that's killed 800+, 5 on Israel's starvation campaign and two that mention, in passing, child amputees in Gaza. I argue this is makes no sense and is depraved
Child Amputees, Aid Massacres, Mass Starvation—the Israeli War Crimes NYT Covers Less than Mamdani and 'Globalize the Intifada'
Theoretical, third order, speculative violence must be condemned while actual, real world mass violence, that actually exists in reality, is seen as normal and unworthy of sustained coverage.

Media outlets can't pivot to AI to save themselves. It's not a business strategy and it's not going to work. The only path forward is for journalists to lean into their humanity, to do things AI can't, and to make clear they are writing for people, not algorithms:

Read @awalkerinla.bsky.social on the LA28 Olympics' pathetic descent from its promise to deliver a "car-free" Games to then a "transit-first" Games to now bringing on Uber as a sponsor (in addition to a ridiculous 'air-taxi' sponsor & a car sponsor, Honda). Inexcusable in this era of climate change.
What a moment for LA's megaevent organizers to step forward with a statement affirming their commitment to an equitable transportation strategy and a plan to guarantee the safety for everyone in LA to move around the city without cars, games or not.

Spoiler: they did not do this
RIP "car-free" games
If these games are still meant to be "transit-first" — why not announce a transit partner, first?
