"are you a boy or a girl?"

I am the living, burning soul of a murdered planet stuffed into a meatsack and I'm mad about it
"are you a boy or a girl?"

i am smelling like a rose that somebody gave me on my birthday deathbed.
"are you a boy or a girl?"

i am the scent of burning leaves on an autumn night. i am the wind shaking bare trees. i am the shadows cast by moonlight. i am the raven's cry. i am the rose and i am its thorns. i shake the very earth with my footfalls.
they did. it's my lego city where there are no cops or cars
They should invent a city that doesn't spend 60% of its budget on cops

They just need to be able to frankly discuss how many seconds of drivers time a pedestrian’s life is worth.

couldn't say it better than Mike here
Hand made cookies are nice and I enjoy them as much as the next guy, but you aren’t going to make enough cookies for enough people at a reasonable price unless you use some cookie cutters.

If you want a hand made cookie, buy one, no one is stopping you, just don’t complain about Oreos existing
"Cookie cutter" housing is good. It's good when cities pre-approve designs, making it easier to add more housing. www.berkeleyside.org/2025/12/09/t...

this is what democrats folded for, and it ain’t paying the bills
Tomorrow, the Senate will vote to either save the ACA tax credits or not.

This will determine if premiums will skyrocket for millions of Americans.

Pay attention to see if Republicans vote to help or hurt regular Americans.

switch out "tech" for "economists" here and it still works perfectly
If you want people to stop being so mean about tech, have you tried not crying like a baby about it and taking it on the chin given that most people actually do have a good reason to hate what is happening even when their model of its machinations and integration into the macroeconomy is inaccurate

steam heated waiting benches! hear that, New York and DC?
Real transit stations are great places. My brother helps maintain this one in Utica, NY.

It sees 8 daily Amtrak trains, plus Adirondack R.R. heritage trains. It has a barber shop, a restaurant, steam-heated waiting benches, office spaces, a gift shop, & hosts the weekly farmer's market year-round.

My dad was not special – HS grad who owned a trucking company. People disappear all the time. But I could not handle the loss. Live or die: It was on me to figure it out

Doing so pushed me to develop skills—writing, grit. To reluctantly become an investigator, to decide if I even wanted to survive
My dad disappeared from his Baltimore trucking company when I was a kid. 20 years later, I went looking for answers.

I did it to survive.

In telling this story, I hope in some way to help others do the same.

political crusades to exterminate trans people - and advocacy work to save ourselves - takes up precious, limited policymaking time and capital. especially at the state level with the short legislative sessions. this tactic makes perfect, evil sense

someday we're going to have real treatments 🥲
Korean study finds how COVID-19 affects memory, suggests a possible treatment.

Korean researchers found the COVID S1 spike protein disrupts nerve cells, harming memory and causing anxiety in mice. Metformin restored nerve function and reduced toxic proteins, suggesting a possible treatment.

our little one flinches at the air when we let the cats out onto the deck. he shivers uncontrollably while getting changed. he wails like a baby goat when he has to wait 5 minutes for milk. my heart hurts, knowing how much their hearts break for their babies, in cold, wet tents without enough food
No one deserves to begin life with such suffering. When you see ababy so vulnerable, you realize that compassion isn't achoice, its a duty This family lacks even basic necessities life,so let's send them our warmth tohelp them survive this genocide that permeates daily lives

Fonts are in the news, so I'm going to take the opportunity to port over an old thread: what was typography like in the Soviet Union?

Spoiler: they did not just have 1 font everyone had to use. As a matter of fact, there were 39.

One of them, you can see here, used to great effect for "Chernobyl."

a compendium of Frederick Douglass's speeches and essays
omg. Kat Abughazaleh just posted that if she's elected, she'll swear in on a copy of Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower.

If you were elected to public office (never mind whether you'd ever actually run), what book would you swear in on?

A woman in Saskatchewan needs surgery for a parathyroid issue and is being offered MAiD instead.

There’s no one in the province who can perform the procedure and the government won’t pay to send her elsewhere.

This is why disability advocates warn about assisted dying
