In a fascinating union of two of my interests, it turns out that the technology that built the special effects of star wars (motion control) was invented by UC Berkeley to research how Marin residents would react to development proposals if they could see realistic video renderings.

Worth noting: traffic calming & road diets reduce speeds (and thus increase safety & throughput) but generally don't increase travel time in urban places.
These suburban drivers *perceive* a delay because they have to pay more attention and aren't able to accelerate as fast between the red lights.

To suburban drivers used to having 100% of road space in their suburb, having to slow down a bit in the city because a pedestrian is crossing feels like oppression. I believe this helps explain some of the state laws preventing blue cities from doing traffic calming or road diets

When I politely tapped a signature gatherer on the shoulder to tell him he was breaking the law, he flipped out yelling "WHY ARE YOU TOUCHING ME! YOU CAN'T TOUCH ME!"

I just learned a friend was hit by an inattentive driver while riding on the popular 9-Line trail in SLC.
She'll need surgery & a long recovery, which is bad enough on its own but this comes right after a layoff in which she lost her healthcare coverage. Here's a link if you can spare a few bucks.

I just learned a friend was hit by an inattentive driver while riding on the popular 9-Line trail in SLC.

Utah: Just in case this happens to you, don’t sign anything. This is an effort to allow the legislature to gerrymander with impunity. Also, tell these people to get off transit if you see them there.
I was accosted by another paid anti-Prop 4 signature gatherer today, this time on the train.
I had to tell him three times he wasn't allowed to gather signatures on UTA property, at which point he became belligerent and began yelling at me before getting off at the next station.
