9 inches of rain in 18 hours? In Los Angeles?????
This is a remarkable forecast discussion from the WPC:

"...heavy rainfall totals for Southern CA will likely occur over an 18 hour period, with widespread 4-7 inch totals, with isolated max amounts of 9"+..."

"...anomalous 850-700 mb moisture flux; 5+ standard deviations above the mean..."

Breaking news: Trump is citing “national security” to halt all active work on offshore wind projects

Five giant energy projects, countless jobs at risk

My story explains how the argument has legal weaknesses and comes from an anti-wind policy doc I reported in January
Trump Uses ‘National Security’ To Freeze Offshore Wind Work
The administration has already lost once in court wielding the same argument against Revolution Wind.

In Georgia, the state has made "catastrophic" cuts at DHS, citing an $85 million deficit.

A provider described one result: a mom who relapsed last week. "Visits with her child were keeping her sober, but transportation services had been cut."

Georgia is sitting on a $14.6 *billion* budget surplus.
Department of Human Services cuts services to families to deal with deficit
As Georgia's Department of Human Services struggles with a massive deficit, Commissioner Candice Broce pleaded with state lawmakers for more funding.

Bob and I were among the hundreds of researchers that were supposed to conduct the 6th U.S. National Climate Assessment. Now it looks like they're gonna produce it with a few people and Grok? Communities need rigorous and accurate information about climate change. This will put communities at risk.

I have spent so much of my life writing the reports that show that programs like this are Good and the way that evidence doesn’t matter anymore is just… so dispiriting
The rate of return here is crazy: for a few hundred thousand dollars, this lab produces literally billions of oysters and supports a seafood industry worth hundreds of millions. And the Trump administration is just like "fuck all that, it's wasteful spending, you're fired"

This is the good stuff right here.
James Talarico: The Bible doesn't mention abortion or gay marriage, but it goes on and on about forgiving debt, liberating the poor, and healing the sick. The closest thing we have to the kingdom of heaven is a multiracial, multicultural democracy where power is truly shared among all people

It’s clear at this point that the 2016 World Series victory by the Cubs was unfortunately/apparently the greatest sin against God ever committed by a human society and undoing what it wrought will require a variety of specific Chicago-related outcomes.

Good thread 👍🏼
This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal: www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/o...
