young posters, the use of language changed before you were born, so in case you didn't know this:

the reason things like Social Security and Medicare are called "entitlements" isn't (derogatory) it's because access is *guaranteed* in exchange for your advance payments into the program

another great example along with Wired and Teen Vogue of how real journalism these days can be a lot braver at outlets where no one is trying to get in good with the White House press secretary

they’re out here with us, reporting on what’s happening to us all, instead of trying to get inside access

Also because of the way the US is structured, only federal employee strikes would impact the federal government and they're currently suing to stop what's happening. A lot of the general strike discourse skirts the violence issue too. Cops have no problem using their unions as shields for murder

That’s rich, coming from the guy who used his power as a federal judge to start making (at least) interns and clerks sign nondisclosure agreeements because he was afraid of being outed as a sexual harasser.
I can only read this preposterous piece by a disgraced federal appeals court judge intimating that Democrats may cancel elections as pure projection so to lay the groundwork for Trump's "defensively" cancelling elections. www.wsj.com/opinion/coul...

So.

It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year.

I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

If you're screaming at a hospital about teen trans care, keep screaming.
Incredible news. After immense pressure and threats of protest, Children's Wisconsin has reinstated treatment for at least one trans teen under its care.

Several hospitals across the country determined their fear of Trump's illegal EO was more important than their trans patients.
UPDATE: Children’s Wisconsin hospital reinstates gender-affirming care for trans teen after canceling in wake of Trump’s executive order
The order is being challenged in court as illegal and unconstitutional.

One of these days we're gonna have to reckon with the fact that "money that I spend which does not directly benefit me is a waste" is a popular sentiment.

I think we should state plainly that this is selfish on its face.

And stupid when you have awareness which extends beyond your nose.

Research universities are often the largest employers in their region. They are often the primary health care providers to communities. This funding shift will not only reduce US research leadership, it will put working people out of work and reduce healthcare access.
Excellent 🧵 on this evening's NIH announcement of a dramatic reduction in indirect rates for research institutions, which amounts to a generational restructuring of the US research and development ecosystem. These cuts are effective immediately, not just for new grants but for existing ones.
6. The policy does not just affect funding going forward. All existing NIH grants will have their indirect rates cut to 15% as of today, the date of issuance.

For a large university, this creates a sudden and catastrophic shortfall of hundreds of millions of dollars against already budgeted funds.

This @melissagiragrant.com piece takes on social media narratives about protesting ('why aren't people in the streets?'), and highlights the fact that many communities have BEEN protesting, never STOPPED protesting, are ALWAYS fighting for their lives.

Defying mainstream media narratives about the exhausted opposition, protests are picking up in D.C. and across the country, led by protesters who never hung up their placards to begin with.
