really like the bit of my work where I get to actually go and look at what's inside Big Important Software Projects that everyone's been taught to believe are inscrutable arcane magic and go "see, it's just programming, you can figure it out"

it's kinda weird that all the software i am expected to use for work are all written by distributed teams, go, python, postgres, linux, chrome, k8s etc

and despite being told "the best teams work in an office together" i don't know of any software i use that's actually written that way

I don't think "tummy hort" should be allowed to make you feel like you're Straight Up Literally Dying. Like your brain should really be saving that signal pathway for actual emergencies. "gut flora disliked the cheese" is not a legitimate reason to slam the Multiple Organ Failure break-glass button

yay google redesigned the clock app Again and now the alarms page isn't completely terrible (editing an alarm *finally* just opens a modal)

unfortunately they also redesigned the regular "clock" page and forgot to turn on tabular numbers. so the time jumps around every second 🫠

"do what you like" is a bit like hearing "did you try winning the lottery"

the thing that makes people like their job is stuff like having agency and feeling that the work is meaningful, being trusted as a peer, etc

and then way down the bottom of the list is things like "the actual work"
I agree with @caseynewton.bsky.social who writes the Platformer newsletter. "The best productivity hack in the world is simply liking your job."

For 30 years as a college teacher I told my students: If you can't wait to get to work because you're so into what you are doing then you did it right.

"Lena" isn't about uploading
Quite a lot of science fiction isn't about what it's about. "Lena" is about uploading, but uploading isn't real. It doesn't exist. It might exist at some point in the future, but that just seems prett...

"you're acting childish"

do you remember being a child. being powerless. subject to the whims of the people with real power. do you remember how that felt. how it felt to have your concerns ignored because you were too small to stand up for yourself.

you should try to remember that

it might help

fi you've worked at a company that sends out employee well-being surveys and you answer them going "I am having a really bad time" and nobody ever responds to this, this depersonalises you and deepens your despair

now picture a child developing the same disposition towards their teacher
