Not for the first time, I'm also struck by how the halftime show was just a showcase of everything Conservatives say they want.

Like, let's start from the beginning.

Growing up all the dudes were Ti this or Big that. Or something entirely out of left field. And I remember the furor when Bill Clinton ran for President and tried not to use his legal name on the ballots. William Jefferson... Who?
Baffled by transphobes insisting that the name on your birth certificate is Your True Name Forever when it was common in my grandparents' generation to just...pick a name you like and use that, nbd. I literally found out both of my grandma's birth certificate first names FROM THEIR OBITUARIES.

Academic history is generally a toss up between "here's something interesting that happened, and it's a cautionary tale" and "now let me tell you about this asshole." Often both tbh.

I am sorry that Gen Z is living in the world George W. Bush made. All the stuff of the past quarter century that brought us here. Obama was however their first impression of what a US President is like.

Reagan was the first President I remember, and I remember not liking him for some reason.

Contact your local academic library. Many have a chat service much of the day if you like the chat setup. But with a human with years of education behind them who can send you to an even better informed human!
Knowing which problems are common or uncommon itself requires significant domain knowledge
i feel compelled to remind everyone that chatgpt/LLMs are functionally the *opposite* of an actual expert.

the more your problems are unusual or novel, the more likely LLMS are to be wrong. they are least helpful when it's most important

I keep thinking of a sequel to "Hamilton" about Aaron Burr moving to Mississippi in about 1807 to plot... Something.

The guy really never let anyone know what he was up to.

"AI has no voice. It has no mouth yet all it does is scream."

What an amazing line.
My writing group last night said "your voice is so strong, & the way you modify that voice from POV to POV is just so well done"

One of the ways sports is like art is that you don’t start at the top of any game; you work & practice to gain skill, insight, & experience. But a practitioner can enjoy it at any level. You don’t have to be a gold medalist to enjoy snow boarding. You don’t have to be a pro artist to enjoy drawing.

Librarian tip: if you want to write a bio piece (history, genealogy, whatever) in the age of key word searchable, open access text databases, pick someone with an uncommon name, for that time and space.

The problem with historical research is you either have just enough to make your word count goal or way too much.

Also realizing how much my hard earned mastery of search engine operations has helped me navigate this digital humanities wilderness.

Rewatching this movie and I always liked Finnick. Just a little escapist fiction after a long week.

Ever see a southern mockingbird tell a cat or hawk "bless your heart"? Blink an eye and there are five of them. Then ten. These things have a way of catching fire.

There is quiet joy in cooking for yourself. Less expensive, often healthier.

You can always pretend you have your own cooking show. Release your inner Gordon Ramsey. Or Jamie Oliver. Or whoever.

Or you.

Be you. You're the expert in your kitchen.

I wish there was even a little money in academic writing. I do enjoy it but don't need to do it for my career precisely. But writing is writing, I guess.

This is Jerry Lawson. He invented the video game cartridge for the Fairchild Channel F system. Because of his invention, many consoles had cartridges and CD formats and would become the norm.

The Atari 2600, NES, Genesis, and many consoles wouldn't exist without him.

Happy Black History Month.

When I think of accessibility, past and future, I am reminded of Andi Buchanan's essay "Design a Spaceship" (2018):

So: design a spaceship. Design yourself a spaceship.

You have the vacuum of space. Everything else is up to you.

I feel the need to put all the zeroes when discussing large numbers. Especially when discussing money.

Was explaining to a friend how Haiti paid reparations to France for their independence, 150,000,000 francs (1825).

Now we can see how big of a number that is, compared to 150M.

Lots we could decide to do with $75,000,000,000.
👀 Every Senate Democrat + Collins and Murkowski just voted for the Bernie Sanders amendment to repeal the $75 billion in additional ICE funding under Trump’s “big beautiful bill.” The measure failed 49-51.
