Having peers you trust enough to have long talks about your struggles and insecurities and craft mysteries will save your gosh-darned life.
Here's some writing advice you don't hear often: Straight up talk to other writers about what they're working on. The amount of joy you can gain as a creative person by just hearing the struggles and triumphs of your peers is so rewarding. It's helped me more than a thousand dumb "tips and tricks"

The hardest part of being an author is turning in a short story or book and waiting to hear if the editor liked it. No matter how many stories you write, you're never sure if you've hit the mark. The second hardest part is spoon-feeding the muse chained in the cellar, but we don't talk about that.

It's easy to feel down from lack of contracts, low sales numbers, etc, but remembering the joy of that moment? Of that day?
Nothing beats it. Except maybe the impact on kids I've reached as a result. ❤️

i feel insanely lucky to have gotten to see some really well preserved hiroshige prints at bk museum. every single comics artist has him in our creative lineage. the really clear storytelling in his composition, his use of simplified forms, the structure of negative space. chefs kiss

Found the best kind of cramped, chaotic bookstore today in my walk around Wexford. And all because the baby needed to nap and I needed to get out of the hotel where we’re staying. Love how the utter disorganization forces you to dive in and just root around.
