Ok. So. It's pub day. My book GANDOLFINI: JIM, TONY, AND THE LIFE OF A LEGEND is out today.

And as I'm sure you've heard from other authors, first week sales really do matter so much! So I'm gonna sell a bit.

Ah yes, just like all the millionaires who were going to leave NYC if Mamdani got elected.

Stfu and pay your fair share, drama queens!
Billionaires are considering cutting or reducing their ties to California by the end of the year because of a proposed ballot measure that could tax the state’s wealthiest residents.
A Wealth Tax Floated in California Has Billionaires Thinking of Leaving
It’s uncertain whether the proposal will reach the statewide ballot in November, but some billionaires like Peter Thiel and Larry Page may be unwilling to take the risk.

YEP.

Meanwhile HEATED RIVALRY and THE PIT are dominating pop culture discourse for several weeks by… releasing their episodes over several weeks
I saw or heard someone declaring that Netflix had won in terms of binge release vs episodic and I was like, "Why are they chunking out their top show in 3 segments then."

I know it’s been widely remarked upon but Netflix releasing eight episodes of STRANGER THINGS in three installments is so funny to me

They’re so close to getting it

Imagine still using Twitter.
Users are noticing Twitter/X has added a Grok-powered AI image editor that lets anyone edit any image on the platform, including other people’s artwork using text prompts.

Artists warn there’s no opt-out or consent, raising concerns over unauthorized edits and misuse.

I’ve spent 4-plus hours so far interviewing McT for the book and he is still sharp as a tack, smart as hell, obsessed with film theory & technique.

He’s 11 years younger than James L. Brooks and if that dude can get a studio to finance ELLA MCCAY than this man should get to make any movie he wants
someone’s gotta give John McTiernan like $200m for one last job before he dies. he could save action movies and redeem himself for his criminal past
DIE HARD has great lighting. Look at those blues and skin tones enshrouded in darkness, we got a light blasting through smoke in the next room to give you the contrast; you wanna know why I dunk on modern blockbusters? This is why, the visual poverty, the fear of lighting a set properly

This is really terrific. Do yourself a favor and watch
In 2023 I became obsessed with videos of dads in cargo shortswaiting in parking lots during Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. So when she came to town, I grabbed a camera and headed down to talk to them. I thought it'd be funny. It turned out to be something else entirely.

This is just beautiful. Sincere but understated. You can feel the ache of loss. Scorsese is as good a writer as he is a director and actor. My house is full of books that he contributed essays, forewords, and introductions to, and every one is a gem.
I've seen this going around today and it's beautiful, so here's a gift link.

Classic Corner: My Fair Lady — Crooked Marquee
George Cukor’s classic movie musical (now streaming on Netflix and out on 4k) is a stark reminder of how far the genre has fallen.

My VICE series on the films of the fall of 1997 comes to an end with three of the big releases of Christmas Day, 30 years ago: 'Jackie Brown,' 'As Good As It Gets,' and 'Wag the Dog."
The 1997 Movie Season Ended with a Bang and a Whimper
'Jackie Brown' was excellent, but other selections weren't as good as it got.

Frank, unsurprisingly, is right
Die Hard 2: Die Harder is also a Christmas movie, and I think it's the best Die Hard sequel. I know a lot of folks are partial to Die Hard With A Vengeance, but to me that one comes off more like a really good Lethal Weapon sequel.

My dude you are literally a media analyst, it’s YOUR actual job to judge “whether it should have been included or not,” my god
As "60 Minutes" finalized its "Inside CECOT" report last Thursday, CBS sent the White House a request for comment. A WH spokesperson responded within a few hours. The quote was not included in the "60" report – so, judge for yourself whether it should have been included or not >>>
