I particularly liked this quote: "Poverty is not a failure of personal responsibility. It's a failure of public policy priorities."
This week the Greater Cleveland United Way came to the Ohio Capitol to make sure the Legislature knew about their ALICE report. In this week's ICYMI, we explain what the ALICE report is, which way the trend lines are going, and what state government should do to help.

Cutting Medicaid means costs are shifted to providers. When patients lose coverage, they turn to ERs for care they can’t afford. Hospitals eat the cost, pass it on to insurers, and your premiums go up.

Medicaid cuts mean a worse health care system for EVERYONE.

Thinking about this today as I work in my office with the lights off to try to conserve energy, since East coast energy companies are asking people to conserve energy where possible in this heat wave.

I don't live in NYC but even here in Ohio I can tell that the results of this primary are going to have an impact far beyond the big apple. #mamdaniformayor 🤞🤞
As we head to Election Day, for folks who voted early, thank you. I know some folks have not yet made up their minds. I am making an appeal to you.

Please do not rank Cuomo. I have worked with every single one of the candidates for mayor. I will tell you he does not like us.

Um we are like one step away from the government collecting the DNA of every US citizen. Collect the DNA of children to solve future crimes... means they assume immigrant children will be criminals.

The DOJ has argued that DNA collection at the border will help solve crimes in the future. But experts say that the children’s raw genetic material will be stored indefinitely and worry that it could be used for more extensive profiling.

I remember this day so clearly. Reading about it. Hesitantly watching the video to bear witness. Quietly telling my husband, "I think I just watched someone be murdered." My stomach aches remembering. But remembering is so important. The injustice is still palpable. This happens all the time. RIP
Five years ago today, George Floyd was murdered by Derek Chauvin.

He should still be alive.

It's so wild to me how much men hate women.
Republicans just made their big bad billionaire tax bill worse.

They just added a provision that pressures health exchange plans to drop most abortion services—EVEN if federal funds aren’t used to pay for them.

Millions of women will lose access to basic health care if the GOP gets their way.

Republicans are scheduling votes in the DEAD OF NIGHT on Trump's "big, beautiful bill."

They advanced their bill last night at 10:30PM. The next vote is scheduled for 1AM on Wednesday.

Why hide? Maybe because this bill rips away health care from babies, new moms, and seniors.

We have one democratic justice on the Ohio Supreme Court. A sitting republican justice wants to run against a sitting democratic justice before his term is even up so he can serve an additional 4 years than he’d be allowed to serve otherwise.

Surely unrelated, Cleveland Clinic is the only Northeast Ohio hospital system that did not operate at a loss last year.

I don't think it's okay for the administration to be pushing for mask bans at universities when ICE agents wear masks while literally kidnapping people.

"The Constitution is only as strong as our willingness to defend it."
I visited Rümeysa Öztürk this week with @markey.senate.gov & @repmcgovern.bsky.social.

What we found was not just a young woman locked up without charge, but also a democracy being put to the test.

Read our op-ed about why her case has implications for everyone.

Mohsen Mahdawi was on the path to citizenship when he was abducted from his final citizenship appointment.

Karim Daoud was also taken after he was told he needed to go to the immigration office for a routine matter.

Form your own conclusions.
Mr. Mahdawi has been accused of no crime. He's a green card holder for over 10 years. He was targeted for his speech.

Fundamentally anti-American.
