The obvious point here, which doesn't seem to have occurred to Jenrick, is that there has been a long history of white people moving out of ethnically mixed neighbourhoods. Refusing to integrate, if you will.
Wow. Robert Jenrick doubles down by branding a black journalist's questions "ridiculous" and saying that the problem is not his comments, but "journalists like you who pop up and try to knock me down", adding that "this is the reason why terrorist attacks happen". ~AA

Coverage of Jenrick today basically amounts to sane-washing. He didn't criticise judges. He claimed there was a conspiracy by certain judges, who he had discovered and could number, to undermine British law and create open borders.
“… a sort of mad McCarthyite scream of paranoia and anxiety of the sort which he has now branded himself… he is living entirely inside of his little mind…”

Ian Dunt @iandunt.bsky.social nails Robert Jenrick’s plans for “activist” judges during Sky News’ Press Preview.

Like all the greats, Brian Patten wrote simply and personally - and in that, communicated the profound nature of what it is to be.
I was his editor. I shall miss him terribly. Here's 'Armada', about the death of his mother.

Very sad to learn of the death of Brian Patten. His poems cover every occasion and emotion. But his Love Poems collection, in particular, shaped my teenage soul.

These are some of the most extreme restrictions on immigration in years. We're told to see them as benign because they're less bad than Farage's far-right extremism. But they are still terrible.
Mahmood says she will introduce new conditions for indefinite leave to remain:

Lived here 10 years not 5
Being in work
Not taking a penny in benefits
No criminal record
Giving back to community eg volunteering

But she can’t outrun her reputation. A COLD CASE PC Alison Pemberton is living in the shadow of her twin sisters, who were abducted thirty years ago. As the only witness, Alison has spent her life trying to remember the details of that fateful summer day and discover the truth about what happened to her sisters and why, a few months later, her father also disappeared.

What has Yvette Cooper’s proscription of Palestine Action done to this country?

Beyond absurd. It’s extreme authoritarianism. These police should be arresting rapists & crooks, not neglecting those duties to spend time arresting citizens standing against genocide.

It undermines police and the law.

There are some great books in this piece
Which book sold 27,000 copies in 30 mins? Which was "a pure pig to write"? Who started planning how to spend the money - then didn't win? Who deemed his own books "pompously moralistic"? What judge called the prize "crooked nonsense"?

My look back at @thebookerprizes.bsky.social in the 1990s:
The Booker Prize in the 1990s: 10 novels that are well worth revisiting | The Booker Prizes
The last decade of the 20th century saw A.S. Byatt, Roddy Doyle and J.M. Coetzee win the Booker, but there are many other shortlisted titles that modern readers should seek out

Very sad news about the death of Denzil Meyrick at the age of only 59. He was a truly original voice on the crime writing scene, with his twisty plots, mordant wit and memorable characters. And he was such an entertaining guest at festivals such as "Bloody Scotland". Condolences to his family!

I never met him, but I will miss him. Books do that for you.
