Forgot to post the title: How Fascism Works by Jason Stanley
Finished this one this week and man was it a read. Highly recommend. You're going to be so mad, but it gives a great base of information that's important and sadly still relevant.

Every time I posted about how much my insurance was through the Exchange, people would say, “what are you talking about? I’m only paying $33 a month.”

Those people are about to find out they were on Medicaid.

This now-famous story, published 44 years ago today, was the NYT's first report on AIDS (which did not yet have a name). The subject was considered so minor that the NYT ran only 2 more stories about it in the year following. By the time the story made the front page, the death toll was over 1000.

This month’s win is that I’m finally back to pre-move savings and only about 10k away from my savings goal. I might get this knocked out within a year.

It wasn’t just the move that took me out. It was also helping family. Had to put a pause in that for a minute.

There was a study published in Science just under 15 years ago that showed that rats in a lab were able to show empathy & altruism for one another.

When challenged, they would choose to free a captive buddy over food. Later in the tests, the liberating rat would save treats for the captive rat.
Tell me something cool you’ve learned about nature.

This is a reference to the iconic,
Pulitzer-winning image of a Vietnam War protester. He later moved to SF, renamed himself Hibiscus and formed a drag troupe called the Cockettes. Happy Pride!

There are only about 100 cars in this photo.

I don’t know what it was like in the 70s, but today during rush hour, nearly all of these cars would have just one person in them. So there’d only be about 100 people in this photo.

One Toronto Streetcar holds over 160 people. One bus, over 50.

Some books are better the second time. Less is one of them. I’m thoroughly enjoying it more this time than the first time around.

The reason men have such a visceral reaction to the idea that they should step in when they see another man treating a woman poorly is that men are scared of other men.

This reaction is not rooted in anger, it is rooted in fear.

Men are frightened because they know what other men are capable of.

Stevie Nicks didn’t write nor sing Everywhere and Little Lies outside of backing vocals. That was the amazing Christine McVie. I see people not realizing this.

Occasionally I run into "is it safe to take the light rail in Seattle, I want to go to Pike Place but I'm so scared" type posts on Reddit, usually from would-be tourists, and I am rendered temporarily speechless. This is a safe and fairly bougie city. Rightwing media must really be working overtime

If you only care about the trees lost to development it isn't trees you actually care about
I hate whenever urban trees get cut down—it is a visceral loss, but let’s put the problem of tree canopy loss in perspective—in 5 years we lost less 0.025% of our tree canopy during development and could easily be offset w/new public trees.
It isn’t the biggest crisis we need to plan our future for.
