There’s a real way in which — from defense to public health to foreign aid — a measurable increase in preventable human deaths and suffering is a central pillar of this administration’s policy agenda.
Terrible decision by SecDef.

We threw out a hundred years of anti-corruption reforms overnight and so far barely anyone has even noticed.
This sort of comic book corruption is quite literally illegal in every single country in the world that has written laws. I don't even know what else you say about this, it's amazing

there's no room for fucking cowards or quitters in the second reconstruction, you can sit in the back and pipe down. these times call for courage and bravery and you don't have what it takes.
America is over. There is no coming back from this.

If we're lucky maybe we claw back some small-l liberalism for our daily lives. But even that might be too much to hope for.

The rest of the world has to move on from us.

They now know that the American people can't be trusted.

They're right.

The Republican Party has been the motivating force behind most visceral patriotism in my life, because their efforts to destroy the cosmopolitan liberal democracy in which I was born have made me realize that I am in fact quite attached to it, and willing to countenance a lot in it’s defense.
biden was worse for my personal patriotism than trump, i think
You know? I still find it remarkably easy to remain patriotic throughout this administration.

Trump and the MAGA crowd are a repudiation of every single civic ideal that the United States is meant to represent—and I see no reason to stop believing in those ideals because of them.

New via NYT — The CIA sent the White House an unclassified email listing all employees hired by the spy agency over the last two years to comply with an executive order to shrink the federal work force. One former agency officer called the reporting of names a “counterintelligence disaster.”

He also revealed that the weapons buildup that Reagan and Weinberger claimed credit for was created by Carter.

Carter used the power of his post presidency to nearly eradicate guinea worm. There were 3.5 million cases when the Carter Center’s work began in 1986. He said in 2015 that he wanted to see “guinea worm completely eradicated before I die.” There’ve been 7 cases this year. www.npr.org/sections/goa...
Jimmy Carter took on the awful Guinea worm when no one else would — and he triumphed
Carter targeted diseases primarily affecting the poor in remote areas — notably "Guinea worm disease." Because of his commitment, case numbers plummeted from 3.6 million a year to just 13 in 2022.

Beyond the absurdity of all of this rationalization, another gratuitous insult to a U.S. ally.

Repeatedly met with Danish counterparts on counter-terrorism matters, including on counter-ISIS consultations in Copenhagen.

“U.S. will have to step in…” sounds like an illegal threat against an ally.

Israel built an ‘AI factory’ for war. It unleashed it in Gaza.
Years before the Gaza war, Israel transformed its intelligence unit into an AI testing ground. Critics charge overhaul has fueled the death count in Gaza.

Why does this matter? It mattered to Elon. Before he bought Twitter, it considered anti-trans rhetoric hate speech and would remove accounts that engaged in it.

He wanted a world where people could say whatever they wanted about trans people and he got it.

trump is lining republicans up for some really ugly and damaging confirmation battles that may eat up a ton of the congressional calendar in year one while setting up a standoff with the military, all in front of an electorate that didn’t give a shit about anything other than grocery prices
and the reason this is important is that politics have not stopped happening. trump is set to squander whatever goodwill he has with the voting public and this is an opportunity
incredible number of you do not seem to understand the difference between trump’s base and the marginal trump voter, i.e. “the people who gave trump the win.”
