If you've ever doubted you're 'disabled enough', or struggled to advocate for yourself as a disabled person, or if you'd like to know more about ableism; this blog post is for you.
“She explained how much Covid could hurt her & how vulnerable it felt to be unable to wear a mask to protect herself.

She was a perfect example of why other people need to wear masks even if they don’t personally think Covid will hurt them”

If you want to honour Alice Wong’s memory, please mask up
Thank You Alice Wong
Alice Wong has passed away and the disability community has lost a leader. I lost a mentor and a friend. The Disabled Ginger wouldn't exist without Alice and everything she taught me.

When you actually think about how many issues are tied to disability you never think about, it’s intentional.

Capitalists Were Never Going To Protect Your Healthcare When Your Disablement Is For Profit
When I first began my career in disability advocacy as a professional, I was bright-eyed, believing that I would be working with the most vocal supporters of DEI and who rallied behind diversity as…

your support for marginalized people must be rooted in principle

if it is rooted in relationships, as most "support" is, it disintegrates as soon as a marginalized person acts in a way you disapprove of

that isn't support, it's a "reward" for good behavior by an oppressor

We are where we are because we made up reasons why certain kinds of people were inherently inferior, and we have never fully done the work to undo that.

I can’t find any archival evidence that that the Langston Hughes poem circulating here today is authentic so here is a sourced Hughes poem, Beaumont to Detroit, 1943, published that year in the magazine Common Ground, in which he compares Hitler and Mussolini to American Jim Crow and the KKK

My partner hated the song because the first time she heard it she was in her late-teens and thought it was about corporate carbonated beverages and never bothered to listen to the rest. It was fun to watch someone hear it for the first time
it’s wildly imperfect from a modern lens and yet it’s notable how “Lola” is a song about a trans woman that absolutely *isn’t* mean-spirited

Doorbell just rang. A package from Australia. The bookseller Nicholas Pounder sent me a small press print of my Times Literary Supplement poem, "Criseyde." It's a private, gift copy, and it has brought tears to my eyes this morning, for so many reasons.

Theres an uncomfortable subject that exit polls, election post mortems & even the most progressive pundits NEVER talk about. All the political hot takes on why Trump won are based on 1 unspoken premise:

It’s time to talk about the
mono-racial coalition

We need to have an uncomfortable conversation about America
What if all the pundits, exit polls and election takes are wrong? What if the truth is even more uncomfortable?

HIV was seen as a homosexual & drug user problem - and Covid is being seen as a vulnerable & elderly problem.

In both cases the narrative has been that as long as you’re not a member of those marginalized groups - the virus isn’t a threat to you. /5
