for context: the second edition of "Observability Engineering" starts off swinging with an opinionated chapter called "The Fundamentals of Building Good Software".

which begs the question... what IS ✨ good software ✨?

i'll drop my answers 👇 but curious to hear others.
@charity.wtf asked a great question on LinkedIn today. Her question was: "What is ✨ good software ✨?"

I'd love to hear your answers, but I'd also like to share mine. So if you'll allow me a moment of indulgence... 🧵

Someone asked me about my advice to devs for "traditional software engineers" who resist change.

My advice:

Being a true tech professional means you keep your toolset sharp, and up-to-date. If you refuse to do so, you are probably not a true professional, but (cont'd)

A dev I talked to said his favorite tool for development recently is called:

(I was expecting some AI IDE)

(Drumroll… it wasn’t)

Tuple!

It’s a lair programming tool that allows “taking over” the other person’s screen/IDE. Apparently his whole team uses it daily & love it

It's a very strange hiring market in tech: both for teams and hiring managers hiring, as well as for engineers looking for jobs.

Companies are struggling to find solid engineers, and solid engineers are struggling to hear back from companies looking for people just like them.

As a tech worker you will need two skills in the current

1. Doing more with less. This isn’t about AI but more that expectations are rising while resources aren’t.

2. Being able to articulate the value of your work, your team’s and your org. If it isn’t high then either change it or find a way out
