Tara is the coolest bravest person I know and yes it’s important to support art, particularly about reproductive care, in this dark period of American history.
good news: I don’t have cervical cancer! bad news: I wrote a short film about it. and to make things even worse, I launched a crowdfunding campaign to try and make it a real short film. GIRLIE is live at girlieshort.com. “check it out”????

There has to be a line that says this subject is morally unworthy of debate. “Fix your hearts or die”.
the hard line of 'racism is not part of any conversation' is the very minimum to maintain to have a civilized order, and the reactionary centrists are among the biggest quislings around when it comes to that.

If there’s no genuine recourse in a political system, violence is inevitable.
If you abhor political violence, you must support the radical systemic change required to hold the rich and powerful accountable for their actions.

If people feel like the only avenue they have for seeing justice is down the barrel of a gun, too many people will pick that option.

let me rephrase - one of the fastest ways to become a monster is to blind yourself to the role that luck played in your success and your failures.

The order of science:

1.) Discover there’s a deadly problem
2.) Work for years to solve it
3.) The problem may not be gone forever, but we’ve won
4.) People forget the deadly problem actually existed
5.) People decide this must mean the science to solve it was a hoax
6.) The deadly problem returns
Yeah. In 2013 I door-to-door canvass to get my city to fluoridate the water. Conversations went like this:

Me: I used to be an environmental chemist.
Them: 😀
Me: I used to test drinking and wastewater.
Them: So you’re against fluoride?
Me: No, I support it!
Them: 😡 (woo jibberish)

Just a quick color pass in Lumetri. Okay, lemme just normalize the volume real quick. Y’all want a quick fade at the beginning? Nothing fancy, just simple. Oh, probably should put in some subtitles. What are your deliverables? Splits? Should I put some leader on

This gets to the heart of why generative AI is not a technological tool of expression like a camera, a word processor, or a pencil. A prompt is just a question, the beginning of an inquiry. You have to answer it yourself.
Other students were submitting Google's AI summary as their own work, expressing surprise that 1. It was AI and 2. That this was also plagiarism

It seemed like they thought since the prompt/search terms were their own, the output is also theirs?

Some students had AI "rewrite" articles for them

we sent a camera to space on behalf of planet america. it all combusted on the way back, but not before our ai astronaut confirmed there is alien life out there; alien life that insists gender is binary. “also they wanted me to make sure to tell you life starts at conception” relayed captain grock

"Oh so you like it when AOC rails against elites but you don't like it when RFK Jr. rails against elites?" is utterly brain dead and absolutely EVERYWHERE.

AOC is right that inequality is bad and RFK Jr is wrong that vaccines are bad. It's not hypocritical to like one of them and not the other!!!

On the other hand, pro-AI people talk about it like they’re trying to unload a shitty used car. “Does it always work right? Absolutely not! Do you need to take extra annoying steps to receive worse results? Of course! But that’s the real beauty of it…”
Some of the anti-AI stuff feels a bit like when people would say "don't use Wikipedia as a source." It's just like anything else, a piece of information that you weigh against multiple sources and your own understanding of its likely failure modes

anyone who says we need to resign to using it, that itll be here whether we like it or not, is a feckless dipshit.

When I left the Washington Post in 2023, my colleagues and I were worried AI would hoover up our work and enable "zombies" to churn out stories based on our reporting and writing styles.

Today WaPo announced a partnership with OpenAI. And here it is: Zombie Gillian Brockell. I DID NOT WRITE THIS.
