The weird thing to me is how fact-free all of the arguments against the humanities are, as you suggest (we do punch way above our weight). Humanities generally makes universities $$$, touches tons of students, have terrific lifelong earning and vocational stats, AND teach people how to think.

On this day in 1986, Tommy Douglas died.
Considered one of the most important Canadians of the 20th century, he served as premier of Saskatchewan, led the federal NDP, and was instrumental in the creation of Medicare in Canada.
Let's explore his life :)

When someone says we are going to build Nuclear to 'protect our energy supply' and you find out it will take 20-25 years and cost 10x as much per Watt as Renewable.

Do you not realize it is a scam?

It's sad that it's hard to find any respectable voices who'll stand up for immigration. I wish we'd welcome people from all over the world, whether they're just regular workers or Nobel material.
"Nobel Prizes have been awarded to 142 immigrants to the United States. Nearly half of the companies in the Fortune 500 were founded by immigrants or their children. Blue jeans, Tesla, basketball, 'God Bless America' — all the work of immigrants."

College freshmen saying "from the river to the sea" is an existential threat to Jewish people. America's shadow president giving Nazi salutes at a rally is not.

misinformation is a very real issue, the problem was it was folded into a power-flattering pseudo epistemology where only grimy foreigners and YouTubers were capable of doing it when some of the biggest promoters of misinformation are the NYT and Atlantic. This bred cynicism and indifference.
Still wild to me that so many "savvy" folks on left and right have bought into the idea that online misinformation is overblown and doesn't really matter. From lies about migrants to transgender people to crime to election denial to climate denial, it's literally driving our country's politics.

While our system does need work. The Canadian healthcare system worked for me today. Ambulance, CT and all blood work done in 3 hours.

Follow up neurology appointment in a week.

Happy New Year.

2024 was a difficult year for transgender people, and yet at the turning of the year, I find myself holding on tightly to the small moments of peace we have right now.

2025 will be difficult, and it is essential that we find space for peace and rest to prepare for it.

Recently took a peek at Twitter and the disinformation is getting substantially more dangerous. Someone could get killed.

The tactics of constantly repeating outright lies, targeting specific people, repurposing years-old footage and presenting them as new is getting to another level. It’s scary.
