Wildlife tracking! I'm reposting things I made this past year. If you look closely at the deer tracks you'll see I added the hint that they're double registering (hind foot is stepping into the same spot as front foot).

⚒️ Showing that rock fracturing from even relatively small earthquakes can generate the geochemical gradients essential for life has interesting potential implications for life on early Earth and on other planets. Very cool!
Super cool--the role of (even very small) earthquakes in subsurface microbiology!
Up to 30% of life, by weight, is underground. Seismic activity may renew the energy supply for subterranean ecosystems by exposing new rock and changing flow paths of water, expanding options for chemolithotrophic bacteria. In PNAS Nexus: https://ow.ly/tp4i50XzuoQ

I wrote about "Quiet, Piggy," natalist movements, the denigration of women in authoritarian societies, the ways that women were treated not so long ago in the workplace (including me), and how you can push back against all that.

Its that time of year again: a male Snow Flea, one of 3 seen yesterday in woodland on the Shrops/Herefords border. These 4mm relatives of Scorpionflies live in moss (esp. Polytrichum & relatives) & are winter active as adults. Not fleas of course but they can jump a bit.

Its no surprise in a country where black and non white women have a much higher maternal mortality that a lot of the stories of women dying post-roe are black
NEW:

In 2024, Tierra Walker was sick and getting sicker. She was also pregnant.

She knew abortion was illegal in Texas, but thought there was an exception for women like her, whose health was at risk. Doctors told her there was no emergency.

Then she died.

Walker is one of several women ProPublica found with underlying health conditions who died when they couldn’t access abortions.
