If you know me outside of my work you know I love vintage signage, esp. painted signs. His branding reminded me of the turn-of-the-century painted ads you catch sometimes in SF and especially when I lived in London. Very of-the-people feel, very right for his campaign.
I am truly shocked to not find more thinkpieces on the incredible graphic design and typography of Zohran Mamdani’s campaign but maybe that’s because searching on the internet is garbage now.

TL;DR lead designer was Aneesh Bhoopathy of Forge Co-Op

“In a system where your income depends on performing as yourself regularly…the temptation to shape yourself to what’s rewarded is impossible to resist.” Been struggling to articulate my unease about the rise in “independent journalists” without sounding like I’m defending old-guard media…this is it.
I did not enjoy writing this; it can't even serve as an ad for my newsletter, which I've suspended due to an overbilling situation that has me almost regretting leaving Substack. But, you know, it's evidence for the piece I just didn't get to include.

One of my greatest vintage shopping conquests was in this but in lime green. Bought it in high school purely for the kitsch factor. Truly did not know what I had. It’s long gone now.

During a military-style raid on a building in Chicago’s South Shore, one resident heard a knock on his door.

It wasn’t the feds —  it was a mom and her 7-year-old daughter, pleading for help.

He let them hide in his unit for the next 3 days.

Their career would be unthinkable today: Leaving prison under armed guards to play hundreds of concerts and record in major studios.
