This is sort of true in CA, but the Democrats have allowed No Party Preference voters to vote in *presidential* primaries for decades. And when CA moved to open primaries (top 2 candidates move to general) it became a moot point for the rest of elections

Here’s the thing though: you don’t need to primary ‘all’ of them. You defeat a few high profile idiots and the rest of them shit their pants
i'm basically with you on this. the optics are bad, the power dynamic is bad, but it's bad either way. the problems go much deeper than "caving" - primarying people is fun but not a structural solution to having elected a party that doesn't want to live in a society or a republic
