Illinois: $1 billion in battery investment will save consumers $13 billion in capacity costs.

This is what @jigarshahdc.bsky.social and I have been talking about the past years. As capacity costs rise while battery costs plummet, we will see more of this.

True - and no billionaire can try to dictate form any longer. A reckoning of centralised versus decentralised power is coming.

This week on Open Circuit, Stephen Lacey, Jigar Shah and Caroline Golin, CEO of Envision Energy Advisors, explore a surprising trend: in some states, big new loads have actually lowered retail electricity rates. Can data centers do the same? 🎧 Listen here: www.latitudemedia.com/news/open-ci...
If large loads lower rates, how can data centers do the same?
In some states, big new loads have moderated prices — even as grid hardening and extreme weather costs drive them up elsewhere.

Bill Gates hasn’t made sense on Climate since he teamed up with Bjorn Lomberg in 2009. This is just a restating of Bjorn’s book from this year about how we have a finite amount of money and we shouldn’t use it for climate. What they get wrong is that climate solutions are now fully profitable.
Bill Gates has a new memo out calling for a “strategic pivot” on climate change, downplaying “doomsday” talk to focus on filling enormous post-USAID budget gaps in global health and vaccine funding. I got an early glimpse of his thinking last week:

Interesting take on Gates from a real insider: this comparison between China's deployment-focused approach and Western innovation focus (pushed by Gates) paints a real picture for why the two countries have looked so different in terms of, well deployment.
His worst offense was reorienting the entire Paris agreement away from affordability toward innovation through his Mission Innovation side show in 2015. China went the route of deployment, we decided that we needed to focus on innovation instead.

Illinois will becoming the 5th state to eliminate local parking requirements for new development projects near transit, after:
—California (assembly bill 2097, 2022)
—Colorado (house bill 24–1304, 2024)
—Oregon (Land Conservation and Development Commission, 2022)
—Washington (house bill 1491, 2025)
Illinois will effectively eliminate parking minimum requirements in ~all of Chicago and much of its suburbs thanks to the transit funding bill that passed last night.
Also contains parking reform! This is a preliminary map of Chicagoland based on the People Over Parking Act provision.

It would also apply downstate though!

The contrast with SNAP is deafening.

The White House is stretching well beyond what anyone could claim is legal in order to pay the troops — while simultaneously stretching beyond what’s legal to NOT pay SNAP benefits.
The White House says it’s going to use procurement dollars to illegally pay the troops for rather than do it the legal way of enacting a military pay bill.

You cannot w/ a straight face tell me using procurement dollars to pay the military adheres to the purpose statute and the Antideficiency Act.
