If you're looking for a good "oh shit" number visualized well, I present the number of billion dollar "natural disasters" in the US since 1980. Trump canceled the government's counting of these, but they are maintained now here www.climatecentral.org/climate-serv...

Small mental adjustment, sharing out loud: we all say there’s climate change mitigation & there’s adaptation (to climate change) - both are needed.

But within mitigation, there are both emissions reductions and enhancement of GHG absorbing sinks. Both are important! Morning thought after reading.

22 years ago tonight, my partner and I went on our first date! Happy to report we’re doing better than ever these days.

On the power of writing down what you're sensing: Mary Greer says “the important thing is to express and objectify your intuitive awareness so that by becoming aware of your behavior patterns you will be free to change them.”

People older than me I don't want to email saying "I hope you're well." Because no shame if and when they're not. You're 70, 80 years old? I'll just say "it's nice to be thinking of you" as my sign off. Cheers, Marshall

In the final part of my 5-part series on the history of blogging and RSS, we come to 2003: when RSS Readers like NetNewsWire and Bloglines burst onto the scene, Google buys Blogger, WordPress debuts, and 16-year old Aaron Swartz live-blogs a Dave Winer keynote. cybercultural.com/p/blogospher...
The Blogosphere Blossoms in 2003 As RSS Readers Catch On
In 2003, the read/write web becomes a reality when blog software enables anyone to write to the web. Meanwhile, RSS Readers like NetNewsWire and Bloglines bring distribution to the blogosphere.

I used to think if I just gave people the right information, everyone would make a good choice & change. (Really, I did!) But now I figure good info is at best “necessary but not sufficient.” Some great info, though: UK says net-zero is now the cheapest path fwd! www.carbonbrief.org/net-zero-sce...
Net-zero scenario is ‘cheapest option’ for UK, says energy system operator - Carbon Brief
A scenario that meets the “net-zero by 2050” goal would be the “cheapest” option for the UK, according to the National Energy System Operator

Wow, OpenAI is entertaining a $1B investment from Disney and Disney is like "well, we have $5B in the bank, but ok..." So says The Information's newsletter.

Here in Oregon we had a giant ice storm a few years back. Kicked our asses for a week+ and cost $800M in damages. For context, $20B in flooding this week in SE Asia, 1500+ dead. “New normal” scientists say www.carbonbrief.org/debriefed-5-...

That I can make an application and my computer can now say "before I proceed, here's a key question you need to answer and three different ways we could approach it." And I can say "what's your recommendation? my priorities are x and y." It will then make a case. Amazing.

Instead of Sustainability, I’m thinking of saying “Energy and paradigm transition.” I think that could help widen the circle to appeal to new people.

I'm developing an app with Claude Code and as I ask it to do something, it suggests a way to do it. It asks me if I want to make the change. I say "maybe, what do you think? How else might we accomplish our goal here?" And I'll be damned if it doesn't come up with great suggestions. Amazing.
