I cry when computers do precisely what I asked them to instead of what I wanted
The ASL interpreter is the unsung hero of this video. It's been a few decades since I've signed (my childhood best friend's mom was deaf), but she is Luthering for Brandon Johnson here. It's incredible.
Mayor Johnson: There are those in this country that have decided, at the behest of this president, to declare war on Chicago and American cities across this country. They have clearly decided that they want a rematch of the Civil War. We will not submit to the authoritarianism that is coming down.

"There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people."

Cautionary tale from 2 decades ago.

They're being commissioned as Lieutenant Colonels. An LTC is usually a battalion commander, brigade XO, or a staff officer under a General. That's a lot of military authority/influence for people with zero military training.

I'd say this is unprecedented, except there is precedent and it was bad.

The more people talk about ATProto (Bluesky) vs ActivityPub (Mastodon, Pixelfed, et al), the more I think identity in a social graph is such a narrow slice of the problem.

It's not a matter of legal opinion. It's written in plain language in *the very first sentence* of the 14th Amendment.

Noah was easily one of the kindest people I've ever met. It's always hard to hear news like this, but especially about someone like him.

I'm glad I got to spend time with him along the way.
Just found out a good friend and mentor, Noah Gibbs, has passed away. Rest in peace friend, the Ruby community is poorer in your absence.

Literally all of these are delicious. I legitimately do not understand why anyone thinks otherwise.

Something I almost posted in a PR today and later realized I should have:

Someone will inevitably feel the urge to follow the internet tradition of offering unsolicited advice that they think will be helpful for my use case, so I'll just head that off by assuring those folks: I know.

When I was in the army, we had a joke "being Airborne means never passing on an opportunity to let everyone around you know you're better than they are".

I notice that same smug sense of superiority a lot in the Rust community.
"It's written in Rust" is not a feature of your app. "It's blazing fast" is a hollow claim that makes me doubt it.

Please stop putting these things on your homepage. Please show me why your tool/app/whatever makes my work easier/cheaper/faster-to-iterate.
