Yes, phones in pouches will stop transphobia. /s
On Brianna's 19th birthday, this morning I joined @cheshirepcc.bsky.social and the Brianna Ghey Legacy Project Phone Free Education campaign at the launch at Jodrell Bank of a new £150k initiative to make Cheshire the first county in the UK where ALL state high schools have lockable phone pouches.

Very convenient to be able to shove the transphobia that got this girl killed under the carpet and blame phones instead and be able to deny any criticism like that
Maybe Esther doesn’t think its insulting, but its rubbing salt in the wound to the whole trans community

Too bad you caved to the real danger instead of fighting it.
But there are real dangers out there that must be fought; and energy spent fighting each other is energy lost to that bigger fight.

We pay for the government. Every time they're evil or callous, that's your money going to fuck with people.
I don't want them to be careful or slow or cowardly, I want them to sell tickets to the trials.

It is still wild to me that people empathize for the powerful’s sense of comfort and inconvenience more then with their own self worth enough to actively advocate for their own self-interest, speak to what they need and ask for even basic respect as a human being.

Also, queer representation is down right now, in a culture that’s increasingly hostile to us. So we need more stories beyond the pattern of “assimilated queer couple, likely where one dies”. We deserve a wider range of queer lives on screen.

it’s not that “a gay character died = BYG = bad.” It’s more that BYG is a useful lens to think about how queer stories get structured and what cultural norms they reinforce. It’s only a deal-breaker when the narrative is benefiting from queer tragedy for shock value or spectacle (Emilia Pérez).

I’ve seen people getting angry about me saying this - so I don’t think every time a gay character dies is automatically BYG, nor does it make a show homophobic or bad. For me, the point of the BYG framework is to recognize the patterns/limitations that queer ppl are often placed into the mainstream.
SPOILER FOR PLURIBUS
SERIOUSLY SPOILER FOR PLURIBUS.
Ahh, we're gonna bury our gays right in the first episode, I see.

This is really good to see: Miki Sherrill just put out a statement sharply criticizing the Senate Dems' pending cave in the government shutdown, ripping it as "malpractice" and a betrayal of the people who are "counting on us to fight for them." Sherrill knows what drove her victory. Wake up, Dems.

Predator: Badlands is both the natural evolution of the Predator franchise and also could end the franchise in a studio executives eyes. How do you make a normal “Predator” movie after it? Or even a “Prey” style film. I love it cause you can only go weirder, pitch wise.

I hate to inform you all. Predator: Badlands is very gay. So so sorry.

This. As a scifi nerd, it’s really sickening how some of my favorite franchises have just become a vector for hatred and bigotry. Star Wars has been mired in this for a while but considering what’s happening with Skydance Trek seems to be next, it just…. Depresses me.
I feel this. Discourse and fandom make me miserable, I find memes and meme culture to be asinine, and the way everything digital has been weaponized as a propaganda outlet against marginalized communities sickens me every day. I can’t even fathom someone being built for this.
I really just feel more and more every day that I was not meant to be alive during the internet era. I was fundamentally not built for it.

When you a) have multiple queer characters, not just the dead one or their now traumatized partner
B) the dead queer character is fleshed out (this doesn’t stop it from being byg but helps)
C) their death isnt used solely to traumatize another queer character
All of these apply in this case.

Really enjoyed @jessiegender.bsky.social 's Nebula video on the failures of the documentary framing in a ST:SNW episode contrasted with the Babylon 5 episode "And Now For a Word"
So many good points about construction and consideration, how ISN has an authorial POV where SNW's guy does not

Ugg I’m stuck in that but where I’m stuck in a bad book in a series I really like and want to skip it but can’t and so I don’t start another but it makes it difficult to make time to read it. Just gotta get through it.
