NASA is being told to cancel 19 *active* missions to save $6B, which looks to be less than the ICE *hiring/retention* budget going forward.

I need people to let that sentence sink into their bones for a minute.
If the GOP reconciliation bill passes, ICE gets through FY2029:

- $45 billion for detention, on top of the current annual budget of $3.4 billion
- $14.4 billion for transportation and removal, on top of the current annual budget of $750 million
- $8 billion for hiring/retention
- Billions more.

I think it's very important for researchers to write to their local newspapers, speak out to local TV/radio, and otherwise make their voices heard.

With that in mind, here are some tips for folks who are interested in writing an op-ed piece. 🧵🧪

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Now, two months later, DHS has reversed course.

I know I should take this seriously but this ICE tweet genuinely made me laugh.

It's never too late to mask up with a respirator either. Your health is far more important than social pressure, especially as repeated COVID infections come with more health complications.

If you can't afford them, check to see if a mask bloc is near you: maskbloc.org

Even low levels of the chemicals known as PFAS are linked with cancer and other health problems.

“We can’t live with Covid forever! We have to get back to normal”

The obsession with “back to normal” is why we’re stuck living with COVID

People refused to adapt. We’ve accepted repeat infections as inevitable

Clean air, masks in healthcare & paid time off could have given us a safe “new normal”

I know some folks are like, "I'm autistic and I CAN do those thing" and that's great, but that's actually not why this statement is horrifying.

It's horrifying because he's saying anyone who isn't "normal" and isn't "productive" don't have valuable lives, so should they really be alive?
The full quote from RFK, Jr. is truly disgusting and this is 100% him calling for institutionalization of autistic people. This is horrifying.

Wear a mask
Donate to mutual aid
Support libraries, food banks & community fridges

Fascism thrives when people are misinformed, scared & divided.

Being informed, united & helping one another IS resistance

Definitely do NOT put fake information where they ask for your personal details.

That would fuck up all their shit, man.

Massive cuts to NOAA, including the Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL) are devastating.
Among the critical role it serves to the public (as @drkatfish.bsky.social mentions),
GLERL was also the site of my Spotted Gar experiments for my PhD. 😢
