FWIW, Florida’s new “History of Communism” curriculum is very similar to how the fascist-adjacent right wingers of the 1950s and 60s talked about the place of communism in America. bsky.app/profile/seth...
If the current draft of the Florida State educational standards pertaining to the new History of Communism course are adopted, then students will learn how it's a Commie trick to use the term "McCarthyism" as an insult to impugn the integrity of wholesome anti-communists like today's McCarthyites!

Love this piece from @mattbarnum.bsky.social and I know reporters don't write headlines but I wonder who the "we" is in the headline.

We’re still fighting about pandemic-era school closures — but do they still matter?
We’ve got answers to that and other questions from a new tranche of state testing data.

Peloton and F1 are doing a crossover and that is wild but also, apparently, they're doing a scenic ride around the Las Vegas track and that's pretty cool.

Predictable but still amazing to watch people who spent literally years accusing every librarian, teacher, and trans person they could find of sexually grooming children suddenly throw themselves in with "actually it's ephebophilia"
Megyn Kelly: "I know somebody very close to this case…Jeffrey Epstein, in this person's view, was not a pedophile…He was into the barely legal type, like he liked 15 year old girls…He wasn't into like 8 year olds…There's a difference between a 15 year old and a 5 year old."

KIDS ARE PEOPLE
One more thing. When I wrote about this study showing one-third of Americans don't drive, people were messaging me saying this cannot be true for LA.

In LA County *23 percent* of the population is under 16. Kids are people! We must plan for their movement, just like all nondrivers. Hope that helps!
Highly recommend diving into NRDC's study on car access, which @keawilson.bsky.social wrote about here: usa.streetsblog.org/2025/10/02/report-16-million-have-no-car-access-at-all

Where Nadir was killed, 14% of LA households are car-free. But the infrastructure does not match that reality

Hey so “underage girls” are…children. The word you’re looking for is children. They’re not like, women-in-waiting or women-lite or whatever. They’re children. I think some of you are very uncomfortable with what that means for you but it is still true.

And I'm happy to do a discourse! I think my chat settings mean anyone can send a message!
Be forewarned, people of Bluesky. Jenn is not going to let you get by with passing takes on reading and the Reading Wars.
The last time it made the rounds on BlueSky, I mostly watched it go by because I didn't want to get sucked into bad Twitter-esque habits. This time, though, I'm going to rudely putting myself in mentions and dusting off the old, "Hello! Are you open to a conversation about this skeet?"
November 12, 2025 at 6:40 PM
One of the more compelling things about each time the Reading Wars discourse comes around again are the good, fair-minded liberals and progressives who support book banning and passing laws about what teachers can/can't teach.

Betcha "industriousness" was there, too.
Going through my father’s things I found my grandmother’s report card, circa April 1916. She got a poor mark in “deportment,” which is what they called “Social emotional growth” then. Her parents were probably mad — at the mark, not at the concept of deportment, because they weren’t morons.

Seeing an uptick in people in education writing "transgendered" when describing children or policy. As a friendly reminder, "transgender" is an adjective, not a verb. (I suspect it's happening because "disabled child(ren)" is not uncommon and people are mirroring that usage.)

Call the United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and they will connect you with your senator's office.

If you're represented by one of the squishier centrists, be sure to make a call. Now.
Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.

A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.
