Americana, which I am watching on the plane, is better than it has any right to be, given a strange understated pacing and acting style, but it's kinda won me over. Kinda a noir Western I guess.

Here is my Bond idea: I'm imagining a Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead treatment, where the Bond movie is background to two hapless MI5 newbies.

Recent studies show that some large bats eat songbirds on night migration, plucking them out of the sky. Studies also show rats wait near bat havens and pluck them out of the sky and eat them. This is kind of a vague turducken for whatever eats the rat, I suppose.

Disturbing email from French "Commission nationale du tourisme et des produits locaux": "You have not fulfilled implied obligation" and must "consume French bread and cheese until departure." Checked with Delta and they replied that I've been "flagged for restricted diet until entering US airspace"

This scared little dog who needed to be pulled out of the shelter bc she was shut down is morphing into a velociraptor. "How did you get on the counter?" "Get off the table!" "What's in your mouth?" "Don't herd me!" But also, "You're so beautiful." "I love your kisses." "You're a great dog!" 🧡💛🐕

Cryo chamber and he wakes up in 2056 and takes on Robocop in a kaiju mecha suit.
People are coming up with solid - if silly - ways through in this thread. It’s fun!
But the serious (ish) side of the conversation is about how to go forward with the Bond story in general - of which the “how is he alive?!” convo is a bellwether.

There's a SR novella, Abdication, I'm working on featuring Hargraves and of course the SR coffee table book, which is basically all of Hargraves' files and diaries in a visual narrative, spanning 150 years of events.
@jeffvandermeer.bsky.social - so - Southern Reach Vol 5. Jack. Jackie. Lowry. Hargreaves. Pitman. Old Jim’s real daughter. All post area x expansion but dipping back into barrels/ss&b. Whadya think? (Please write another vol!) oh - and the other copies who came back with Ghost Bird as well!

yes... republicans right now and several establishment democrats have no discernible ethical or moral baseline or compass except in some cases "this ancient book inaccurately transcribed sez whatever i do is right".
Also worth repeating: Mamdani's greatest power isn't something just anyone can learn or emulate. He's got an entire PHILOSOPHY and MORAL CORE based on care over punishment that informs everything he says and does. Without that, the charisma means nothing.

This is absolutely Mamdani's not-so-secret secret power: he knows who he is and what he believes and he wants to help ALL of us. So you can't trip him up with a trick question; you can't get a fake note out of him. BECAUSE HE HAS NOTHING TO HIDE AND HE'S DONE THE READING AND HE'S HERE FOR US.

California alone produces a third of all the food America eats. So this is a lie.
But let’s break down the food produced by the red states:
Guess what percent is harvested by people from Latin America?

Bluesky suspended Sarah Kendzior today for no reason whatsoever. She just shared excerpts of her articles, which were as always incisive and not offensive at all. Hey @pfrazee.com this is super not OK. I know her- we've interacted a fair bit via chats and her work is essential.

Strong contender for this prize:
I really want to read Bruno Latour's book about Aramis, the failed Paris public transportation project of the 1970s, after seeing it in a museum in French. BUT LOOK HOW AWFUL THE ENGLISH-LANGUAGE COVER IS!! Arggh. (More in the alt text.)

Capybaras love reading!
An illegal street racer pulled up to me in Malta & threw This House of Grief at me, shouting, "Read it, you English dolt!" Then screeched off. This is a terrible way to get me to read anything but I picked it up from where it had ricocheted off a now dead pigeon and devoured it in 2 days. Brilliant.

I would like to apologize to the two women holding adorable dogs on the edge of the Jardins de Luxembourg who recoiled in horror when I asked if I could photograph their dogs. My French is bad and maybe I said cook their dogs by mistake or something?
