Thinking about this a lot as I watch my neighbours who use mobility aids navigate the icy ramps that are our sidewalks. They're plowed, sure, but it's the slope that gets you. Sloped for what?? Treacherous for the hundreds who walk here so a single car can comfortably cross once or twice per day.
Winter is one of the best times to educate people about car-centric policies because when it's snowy you can clearly see how little our cities care about anyone not traveling in a car. Even if you're not some activist, someone walking in winter can appreciate how much an unplowed sidewalk sucks.
This was a choice, not by the person walking but by the decision makers who refuse to prioritize them.

this one minute video sums up today's opening of toronto's newest light rail, line 6.

this is so, so infuriating.

~50 min to go 10 km; ~30 min to go 5km.

in this case, the cross street is a minor road, yet the train is still held up for a minute for left turns

So we can only meaningfully discuss public health strategies that demand the individual make a personal choice with their own body.

We're not interested in engaging with broader discussions about the state's role in infection control. Even in publicly managed spaces like schools.

Not one fucking word from any quoted health expert on cleaning classroom air.

Yes, talk about vaccines, ofc that's important.

But there's something else we could talk about here: a measure that protects everyone but doesn't trigger endless debates on the choice to vaccinate.

Clean classroom air!

It's notable that, even in an article critical of RFK Jr., the reporter hedges, saying "There’s no good evidence of serious, widespread harm from the vaccine" rather than just "vaccines are safe." RFK Jr. has made a career of exploiting the ambiguity of the former.

The current proportion of Americans who are immigrants is essentially the same as it was during the Civil War, and during WWI. The aberration was the unusually low proportion of immigrants from around 1930 to 2000.
